As I said, the copy (from mp4 downloaded from web) plays perfectly on pc, but when in the usual DVD / Blu-Ray player connected to my TV, it says it's empty, contains no files!

Where did I go wrong?

Thanks in advance

Brian

Thank you.  Before I downloaded your ImgBurn (which I found recommended by someone's guide video) I had tried Any Video Converter which I've used for years professional but it totally distorted the frame proportions (faces looked equine).  I then tried Adobe Premier Elements 11 which I use when shooting videos, but that insisted on changing the proportions too.  ImgBurn to my delight copied the thing perfectly, but from the original MP4 file.   I'll try your suggestion and see.   If it works this time, I promise to donate!

I'd say your TV player probably doesn't recognize .MP4 files as a playable file type.  So, it finds "nothing" to play.  If you insert this disc into a PC drive and check in Windows/File Explorer, does the .MP4 file show up on the disc?  We have to make sure things are actually being burned to the disc.

As for the video conversion part, it seems a bit odd that 2 different conversion programs would do the same thing.  So, there must be a problem with the .MP4 file itself.  It's not coded correctly or uses some weird compression.  I only use ConvertXToDVD to convert so I couldn't say.  You could try downloading the trial and see if you get the same results with ConvertXToDVD.  The video will be watermarked but you should be able to at least see if ConvertXToDVD does the same conversion thing.  If it does across 3 different video convertors, the problem is with the file.

Thanks for that further help, but I'm suspecting -- but I don't know if this can be technically right -- that the original file was formatted for NTSC and my machine (being in the UK) will play only PAL, but maybe these formats apply only to television and have nothing to do with mp4 and DVD formats.   The problem with the Any Video Converter Professional and Premier Elements 11 is that when I tried to save to the PAL format, naturally it distorted the ratio, so I stuck to NTSC.   But possibly this is only confusing the issue.

My understanding is that both the softwares I mentioned (AVC pro and PE11) did convert to a DVD format before burning, so I assumed that what went onto the DVD disk wasn't mp4.   But it's past midnight here in the UK and I'll have to leave this til tomorrow.  Thanks again.   (I did make a second copy, this time making an ISO first, again perfect on the computer, but not tried on the DVD / BluRay player yet.)

PAL and NTSC don't matter with MP4 files as far as I know.  PAL and NTSC only matter when you try to play a DVD or game on a TV.  As long as you set PAL as the target DVD format so it plays properly on your TV, that's all that should matter.  Even then, it should matter because PAL should play NTSC fine.

As I said, as far as I know, any video container, like MP4, doesn't have a TV format on it.  Only what if you're converting from PAL to NSTC would it matter.  And if you formatted it for NTSC, it should still play on a PAL TV.  PAL can play NTSC, as far as I know, but not the other way around.  If you try to play PAL on NTSC, it's in black and white, distorted, wavy, and the video flashes.
