Pizza is life Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Hi There Iv recently plugged in my old LG GSA-4081B(8X Super multi DVD Writer) which I used to use to copy dual layer DVD's. Im getting an error "Device Not Ready (ASC: 0x28, ASCQ: 0x81)" and then directly afterwards "Device Not Ready (Logic Unit not ready, Cause not reportable)". It does not read that there is a disk in the drive. I have tried CD's and it works fine. I update my firmware to the latest available and tried different firmware versions but i keep getting the same error. I am using Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL 8.5GB so the DVD quality is not the problem. I am using windows XP SP3 Im not sure if this is necessary but I have added my log file below I looked through the forums and found a few similar problems but all the solutions said to use Verbatim discs which i have. LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Has the drive ever been able to burn those discs? Can it see any other DVDs or is it just CDs that work in it? It might need cleaning or replacing.
Pizza is life Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 (edited) Hi there Yes the drive used to copy these exact discs a few years ago It can see all DVD's. Imgburn even detects an already copied Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL 8.5GB. But as soon as I insert a blank it gives me that error Edited November 21, 2016 by Pizza is life
dbminter Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Are the Disc ID's the same for the Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL ImgBurn detects for reading and the blank Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL that it can't? Well, that's kind of a stupid question to ask unless you have another DVD drive that can detect this disc for writing. If you do, try and see if the Disc ID's are the same.
Pizza is life Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 They seem to be exactly the same. Log file below Other DVD drives are picking up the Disc. I can copy to the disk using nero with another drive. So I am assuming the issue is with the Drive and not the disc. I have updated the firmware of the drive to the latest "E: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4081B A104" Is it possible that the problem is with windows xp? Pizza is life Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 Hi I have actually solved the issue. I downgraded the firmware to A104 and then I found an article on updating firmware. It says that the drive must be the only drive attached to the IDE cable and that the drive must be set to Master when updating the firmware. I updated to firmware back to the latest A106 and now it is working. It seems like I overlooked that issue. Thanks a lot for your help
dbminter Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Oh, I take it the drive is a PATA? Since you're on Windows XP, your hardware might be that old. I think the last PATA drive I had where I had to worry about Master/Slave/Select pins was like 2006. I recently found some PATA cables I still had unopened. I got them years ago to have on hand for replacements. Turns out they replaced PATA with SATA before I ever needed those cables! So, that was a waste of money.
Pizza is life Posted November 23, 2016 Author Posted November 23, 2016 Yes it is a PATA drive. My current PC only has SATA so I salvaged an old pentium 4 to put my DVD drive in to use it to copy discs. So the drive is picking up the Empty disc using Imgburn but only after I eject and close eject and close a few times. A few other error's have occured unfortunately. -I cant change the bookdrive for LG (I don't think my drive supports that function) -When I start the copy, ImgBurn tells me i need to format the DVD, when I click yes the format gets stuck at 0% and gives me an I/O error. (I have found a fix online and will try it later) Hopefully these are the last problems I will face
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Please don't believe things you read online about magic fixes for I/O errors. 99% of them are complete rubbish. If you want help with my program, just ask me. The last part of my initial reply to this thread still stands.
Pizza is life Posted November 23, 2016 Author Posted November 23, 2016 Ok, so my problem is most probably that the drive needs to be cleaned or replaced? Today the drive wont pick up the empty DVD's anymore but it still reads copied DVD's first time Yesterday it was reading the empty DVD's. I will try use a Drive cleaning disc and see if that helps
dbminter Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 One thing you might want to try. Since it seems that sometimes you can get this drive to recognize the empty discs, you might want to simply try to power off the PC each time you get a disc to be recognized. Then powering back on might cycle the problem out. However, given what has been said so far, I'd say you need to focus on cleaning or replacing the drive. I've never had any luck with cleaning drives, so you most likely will need to replace the drive. All cases I've ever seen where weird read or write issues popped up required replacing the drive. Plus, it's been my experience most drives need replacing after 9 to 12 months of use.
