Triplog Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 Hi. I'm returning to Imgburn and creating videos after a few years away. I never used to have problems burning dvd's but I'm struggling with the first I've tried on my return. The disc appears to burn ok and contains all the files in the Video_Ts folder. It won't play in a dvd player, on the pc if I "Open Disc" on VLC "dvd:///D:/" appears, then fades and the Play bar status shoots along to about 75% then stops. If I play the VTS_01_1.Vob file it plays properly. Anyone have any ideas? I'm a relative technophobe so not sure of system details - the discs are Datawrite 16x DVD-R and JVC DVD-R8X both of which I've used successfully in the past. Thanks for any help offered

dbminter Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 If the VOB file plays properly on its own, it sounds like some kind of incorrectly authored IFO file. Are you creating your own VIDEO_TS with some kind of conversion/creation software? What are you using? If it has the option of writing VIDEO_TS to hard drive, try that and see if it plays okay on the HDD. If it still doesn't play properly from the HDD, then the culprit is, most likely, the software that created the VIDEO_TS.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 Also, what you've burnt there seems very small. Is that intentional?! You must have used less than 1% of the available disc space.
Triplog Posted December 24, 2016 Author Posted December 24, 2016 (edited) Hi. Thank you for the quick replies. Firstly - yes it's only a few seconds to prove or otherwise that everything is working properly rather than waiting for a full dvd to burn. Yes the VTS_01_1.Vob file plays properly on the hard drive - and will also play if I double click it on the dvd from within File Explorer. (Also - if point DvdShrink to the _TS folders it plays properly) I created an MTS file from Lightworks then used DVDStyler to create the Iso files. In DvdStyler It appears to start the process then creates lots of the following errors "Direct 3d error: failed to create 720 x 0 texture for osd (he=0x8876086c)". If I stop the process it will ask if I want to create an Iso file - which then writes the _Ts folders and files. I then use these in Imgburn Hope that all makes sense! The bottom line is I simply want to burn as good a quality Dvd as I can (the original footage is HD - but totals 100 mins so I realise I'll probably have to split it over 2 discs) Any pointers in the direction of simplifying or making my workflow more robust would be greatly appreciated! Ps - I also realise the day and time - so won't be offended if I don't get any replies for a couple of days. Merry Christmas! Edited December 24, 2016 by Triplog
Ch3vr0n Posted December 24, 2016 Posted December 24, 2016 Unless I'm mistaking the DVD standard dictates at least 1gb needs to be written for successful playback. I doubt your few second clip matches the requirements. And then there's the fact that you're using CMC mag am3 cheap crap blanks. Sent from my Nexus 6P with Tapatalk.
Triplog Posted December 24, 2016 Author Posted December 24, 2016 Hi ISF. I didn't know that about the minimum requirements for playback. I'll try a larger file although it probably won't be for a couple of days now. Thanks also for your opinion on the discs. They were recommended to me (along with Taiyo Yuden which I use for final runs) by people who know better and I've never had a failure with them prior to this. I know everyone will have their own preferences for their own reasons. I'm also old enough to know price doesn't always equate to quality. Merry Christmas ail!
dbminter Posted December 25, 2016 Posted December 25, 2016 The 1 GB minimum is not a factor for playing back successful DVD Video. I've created many VIDEO_TS folders that were under 900 MB and fit on a CD, even though you must burn them to DVD media in order to be recognized as playable DVD's in stand alone players. You shouldn't be using CMC Mags, but if you want to and they've "worked" so far, well, we won't be changing any hearts or minds today. Given the VOB's play fine from the disc, it's not anything to do with ImgBurn, most likely. It's most likely an incorrectly authored IFO file. See if you can successfully play where it failed before by loading VIDEO_TS.IFO from the disc in your preferred player. Barring that, about all you can test at this point is mounting the ISO in a virtual drive software and try playing it past where it failed before. If it still fails, then the ISO is being made incorrectly by the authoring software. I don't know what an MTS is so I've no idea what you're converting from to a DVD.
Triplog Posted December 27, 2016 Author Posted December 27, 2016 Thanks Dbminter - I tend to agree that the error is occurring at the transcoding stage as I'm seeing errors reported there. (Multiple - "Direct 3d error: failed to create 720 x 0 texture for osd (he=0x8876086c"). I don't understand what they mean but I'll work at trying to get past that stage successfully first! I'm using up the blanks I have as they were bought some time ago and I might as well use them as dump them (although some may disagree!) I don't have any affinity for any particular type as I'm really only at the stage of basic conversion from home video to dvd with some editing in between (but suggestions are always welcome) MTS (or MT2S or AVCHD) is the format output from Lightworks Video editing software (as far as I know it's a fairly common format for HD video) and the raw footage comes from a Canon Legria Hf-r78 Thanks again to everyone for the help offered!
dbminter Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Ah, so MTS is a Blu-Ray video format, then?
Triplog Posted December 27, 2016 Author Posted December 27, 2016 Yep as far as I understand but this is a steep learning curve for me!!! I've never worked with hd videos before and previously used Imgburn with Pinnacle Studio. Ill get there - thanks to forums like this!
Ch3vr0n Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Yes and no. MTS is primarily linked to AVCHD. Blu-ray is M2TS only, not MTS.
Triplog Posted December 27, 2016 Author Posted December 27, 2016 Thanks again. I knew there was some sort of relationship but hadn't got the length of figuring out what exactly the differences were.
