macycat Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I see others (e.g., http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?/topic/24605-bluray-dl-fails-verification-discs-no-good/)are having similar problems writing BD-R-DL discs. I have included the burn log below. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. ; //****************************************\\; ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 - Log; Saturday, 24 June 2017, 22:42:18; \\****************************************//;;I 21:33:50 ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 started!I 21:33:50 Microsoft Windows 7 Professional x64 Edition (6.1, Build 7601 : Service Pack 1)I 21:33:50 Total Physical Memory: 16,728,948 KiB - Available: 13,219,152 KiBI 21:33:50 Initialising SPTI...I 21:33:50 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...I 21:33:50 -> Drive 1 - Info: ELBY CLONEDRIVE 1.4 (Q:) (SCSI)I 21:33:50 -> Drive 2 - Info: HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH14NS40 1.01-A1 (J:) (SATA)I 21:33:50 Found 1 BD-ROM/HD DVD-ROM and 1 BD-RE XL!I 21:36:01 Operation Started!I 21:36:01 Building Image Tree...I 21:36:09 Checking Directory Depth...I 21:36:09 Calculating Totals...I 21:36:09 Preparing Image...E 21:36:09 File size exceeds the limit imposed by the ISO9660 file system.E 21:36:09 Name: V:\Videos\Unsaved_V\NHL_20170525_PenguinsSenators.M2TSE 21:36:09 Size: 26,193,051,836 bytesE 21:36:18 Operation Failed! - Duration: 00:00:16I 21:39:13 Operation Started!I 21:39:13 Building Image Tree...I 21:39:19 Calculating Totals...I 21:39:19 Preparing Image...I 21:39:19 Contents: 2 Files, 0 FoldersI 21:39:19 Content Type: DataI 21:39:19 Data Type: MODE1/2048I 21:39:19 File System(s): UDF (2.60)I 21:39:19 Volume Label: SportsI 21:39:19 Size: 47,016,165,752 bytesI 21:39:19 Sectors: 22,957,114I 21:39:19 Image Size: 47,017,033,728 bytesI 21:39:19 Image Sectors: 22,957,536I 21:46:54 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:07:40I 21:46:56 Operation Started!I 21:46:56 Source File: -==/\/[bUILD IMAGE]\/\==-I 21:46:56 Source File Sectors: 22,957,536 (MODE1/2048)I 21:46:56 Source File Size: 47,017,033,728 bytesI 21:46:56 Source File Volume Identifier: SportsI 21:46:56 Source File Volume Set Identifier: 4AD8ACE5015E4D9AI 21:46:56 Source File Application Identifier: ImgBurn v2.5.8.0I 21:46:56 Source File Implementation Identifier: ImgBurnI 21:46:56 Source File File System(s): UDF (2.60)I 21:46:56 Destination Device: [0:0:0] HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH14NS40 1.01 (J:) (SATA)I 21:46:56 Destination Media Type: BD-R (Disc ID: VERBAT-IMf-000)I 21:46:56 Destination Media Supported Write Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8xI 21:46:56 Destination Media Sectors: 24,438,784I 21:46:56 Write Mode: BDI 21:46:56 Write Type: DAOI 21:46:56 Write Speed: 6xI 21:46:56 Hardware Defect Management Active: NoI 21:46:56 BD-R Verify Not Required: YesI 21:46:56 Link Size: AutoI 21:46:56 Lock Volume: YesI 21:46:56 Test Mode: NoI 21:46:56 OPC: NoI 21:46:56 BURN-Proof: EnabledI 21:46:56 Write Speed Successfully Set! - Effective: 26,976 KB/s (6x)I 21:47:24 Filling Buffer... macycat Posted June 25, 2017 Author Posted June 25, 2017 I forgot to mention that this happened twice in a row on two separate BD-R-DL discs.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 Update your drive's firmware to the latest release. http://www.firmwarehq.com/LG/WH14NS40/files.html If your drive can't produce a decent burn at any of the write speeds it claims to support those discs at (4x, 6x, 8x), you'll have to buy some different ones.
dbminter Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 I know the WH16NS40 is terrible at writing BD-RE DL media. I've never used a Verbatim BD-R DL, but I have tried Verbatim BD-RE DL with my drive many times. It fails Verify more often than not at the layer change.
macycat Posted June 25, 2017 Author Posted June 25, 2017 I know the WH16NS40 is terrible at writing BD-RE DL media. I've never used a Verbatim BD-R DL, but I have tried Verbatim BD-RE DL with my drive many times. It fails Verify more often than not at the layer change. Thanks for all the feedback. I updated the firmware, but the third try also failed on read during verify. Any suggestions on a drive that is good at writing BD-RE DL media? Again, thanks for the input.
dbminter Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 My best experience with Verbatim BD-RE DL has been Pioneer's BDR-209M, with a few caveats. The last firmware released for this drive borks writing to Ritek 8x DVD+RW. They won't complete Verifies until formatted by an earlier firmware or in another drive. So, it may require downgrading the firmware on if it borks writing to ALL DVD+RW. Pioneer also has a few quality issues. The Eject buttons will go wonky after about 7 months. Pressing the Eject button won't work the first time, requiring a 2nd press. Same with issuing an Eject command in ImgBurn. Happened on my first 2 models. However, if ImgBurn automatically ejects the disc like after a write before a Verify, it seems to work every time. And there may be a general decline in the quality of the drive itself. My first and 2nd ones still work after almost 3 years, save for the Eject button issue and having to downgrade the firmware. My third one stopped writing BD-R after 7 months. My 4th one was borked right out of the box, failing to Verify on BD-R's the 2nd Pioneer of the same model would write properly to. So, it went back to Amazon.com.

It seemed to do better than the Optical Quantum BD-R DL discs, but I only had a 50% success rate. Then I ordered Philips BD-R DL discs, and I have been 5 for 5 so far. So in summary: LG WH14NS40 drive and Optical Quantum BD-R DL discs: 0 for 3 Pioneer BDR-209D and Optical Quantum BD-R DL discs: 2 for 4 Pioneer BDR-209D and Philips BR-R DL discs: 5 for 5 (so far) Thanks for the advice!
dbminter Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Optical Quantum is not a brand I'm familiar with, so they're probably cheap discs. Any cheap manufacturer will probably almost always fail on double layer media. They did in the past with DVD DL so I don't see why that trend wouldn't continue with BD. I have heard of Philips, but my only experience with them was some DVD-R that CMC made. CMC is the worst optical manufacturer out there. But, that's no reason that Philips would use CMC for BD media. If CMC even makes BD DL media.
