seoras Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 How do I get this window to appears as shown in the guide? When trying to create a DL disk, I click on the calculator button as descibed but i never get the layer break choice window. The disc then seems to burn halfway before failing iwth a 'check condition' error. So many coasters, so few discs ...
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Are you burning DVD video files (a Video_ts folder) ? Please post the log so we can see what's going on.
dbminter Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Yes, if you don't have a VIDEO_TS folder in the root directory of the Job you're building, you won't get a window prompting you for a layer break position. That's only on DVD Video discs. However, this should have nothing to do with any check conditions you'd be receiving. For help with that, as LUK said, we'll need a posted log of a failed burn with the error condition listed.
seoras Posted July 15, 2017 Author Posted July 15, 2017 Attempted to burn a DL disc earlier with a single file as content. All actually seemed to go well but my disc shows the file as 0 bytes. When I look at the .iso file it correctly shows the file size as over 6Gb. ; //****************************************\\; ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 - Log; Saturday, 15 July 2017, 10:36:03; \\****************************************//;;I 09:59:04 ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 started!I 09:59:04 Microsoft Windows 8 Professional x64 Edition (6.2, Build 9200)I 09:59:04 Total Physical Memory: 16,675,160 KiB - Available: 13,532,656 KiBI 09:59:04 Initialising SPTI...I 09:59:04 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...I 09:59:04 -> Drive 1 - Info: HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CH12NS30 1.02-A0 (H:) (SATA)I 09:59:04 Found 1 BD-ROM XL/DVD±RW!I 10:01:04 Operation Started!I 10:01:04 Building Image Tree...I 10:01:04 Calculating Totals...I 10:01:04 Preparing Image...I 10:01:04 Contents: 1 File, 0 FoldersI 10:01:04 Content Type: DataI 10:01:04 Data Type: MODE1/2048I 10:01:04 File System(s): UDF (1.02)I 10:01:04 Volume Label: TESTI 10:01:04 Size: 6,363,780,824 bytesI 10:01:04 Sectors: 3,107,315I 10:01:04 Image Size: 6,364,332,032 bytesI 10:01:04 Image Sectors: 3,107,584I 10:01:12 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:00:08I 10:01:12 Operation Started!I 10:01:12 Image Contents: 1 File, 0 FoldersI 10:01:12 Image Sectors: 3,107,584 (MODE1/2048)I 10:01:12 Image Size: 6,364,332,032 bytesI 10:01:12 Image Layer Break Position: 1,553,792I 10:01:12 Image Single Layer Profile: DVD-R/RW (Media Capacity: 2,297,888)I 10:01:12 Image Double Layer Profile: DVD+R DL (Min L0: 0, Max L0: 2,086,912, Media Capacity: 4,173,824)I 10:01:12 Image Volume Identifier: TESTI 10:01:12 Image Volume Set Identifier: 4AEF5022002F6AF9I 10:01:12 Image Application Identifier: ImgBurn v2.5.8.0I 10:01:12 Image Implementation Identifier: ImgBurnI 10:01:12 Image File System(s): UDF (1.02)I 10:01:12 Destination File: Z:\TEST.ISOI 10:01:12 Destination Free Space: 71,399,600,128 Bytes (69,726,172.00 KiB) (68,091.96 MiB) (66.50 GiB)I 10:01:12 Destination File System: NTFSI 10:01:12 File Splitting: AutoI 10:01:12 Writing Image...I 10:09:48 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:08:35I 10:09:48 Average Write Rate: 12,068 KiB/s (8.9x) - Maximum Write Rate: 17,447 KiB/s (12.9x)I 10:12:37 Operation Started!I 10:12:38 Source File: Z:\TEST.MDSI 10:12:38 Source File Sectors: 3,107,584 (MODE1/2048)I 10:12:38 Source File Size: 6,364,332,032 bytesI 10:12:38 Source File Volume Identifier: TESTI 10:12:38 Source File Volume Set Identifier: 4AEF5022002F6AF9I 10:12:38 Source File Application Identifier: ImgBurn v2.5.8.0I 10:12:38 Source File Implementation Identifier: ImgBurnI 10:12:38 Source File File System(s): UDF (1.02)I 10:12:38 Destination Device: [0:0:0] HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CH12NS30 1.02 (H:) (SATA)I 10:12:38 Destination Media Type: DVD+R DL (Disc ID: RICOHJPN-D01-67)I 10:12:38 Destination Media Supported Write Speeds: 4x, 8xI 10:12:38 Destination Media Sectors: 4,173,824I 10:12:38 Destination Media L0 Data Zone Capacity: 2,086,912 (Changeable: Yes)I 10:12:38 Write Mode: DVDI 10:12:38 Write Type: DAOI 10:12:38 Write Speed: MAXI 10:12:38 DVD+R DL Reserve Track: NoI 10:12:38 Link Size: AutoI 10:12:38 Lock Volume: YesI 10:12:38 Test Mode: NoI 10:12:38 OPC: NoI 10:12:38 BURN-Proof: EnabledI 10:12:40 Write Speed Successfully Set! - Effective: 11,080 KB/s (8x)I 10:12:40 Book Type Setting: DVD+R DLI 10:12:40 Optimal L0 Data Zone Capacity: 1,553,792I 10:12:40 Optimal L0 Data Zone Method: Copied From Original DiscI 10:12:40 Set L0 Data Zone Capacity Succeeded!I 10:12:40 L0 Data Zone Capacity - Effective: 1,553,792I 10:12:42 Filling Buffer... LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 What's showing the file as 0 bytes? Explorer? Are you looking inside the ISO when you say the file size is correct at 6GB, or are you looking at the ISO itself? Try ejecting the disc and rebooting. Maybe Windows will refresh itself properly then. Of course none of this is anything to do with your initial question / issue with the layer break window. Maybe now you've learnt it only applies to DVD Video discs and you aren't building those?
seoras Posted July 15, 2017 Author Posted July 15, 2017 Not building DVDs, just storing files so no VIDEO_TS folder. Oddly, the disc verified ok and then the file showed properly in Explorer. Thanks for the help - I'm not convinced I've solved my issues though - so many ruined discs. Maybe just cheap discs?
dbminter Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 If you're not burning VIDEO_TS, then there should have been no reason a layer break selection would ever have been prompted. As for using cheap discs, I almost replied to your log that you were you were using RICOH DVD+R DL. Pretty much the only good DVD+R DL is the MKM brand from Verbatim DataLife Plus series (NOT Life Series.) although I had good luck with TDK in terms of successful burns and being still readable years later. I had a few Ritek DVD+R DL but more than half of them weren't readable after a year. Ricoh is pretty much the same thing as Ritek. It could be that you had a good burn or a series of good burns and that bad discs will pop up again later because that's the nature of cheaper media. Some will complete burns, some won't.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 Have you tried burning at 4x rather than 8x? The drive is returning a 'Write Error', so it's just having trouble burning to the disc. It's always worth trying all of the speeds the drive claims to support on the given media. As you've already tried 'MAX' (8x in this case), now would be a good time to try 4x. Beyond that, you'll have to give some MKM-003-00 discs a try.
seoras Posted July 16, 2017 Author Posted July 16, 2017 Thanks again for your help. It's baffling how they manufacture and sell discs that aren't up to what they're supposed to do.
seoras Posted July 16, 2017 Author Posted July 16, 2017 Just tried at 4X - failed even earlier at 26%!
dbminter Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 There's an old Spanish saying that we all learn the hard way eventually: the cheap comes out expensive. At least they're not CMC Magentics media. CMC is absolutely the worst media manufacturer out there. As for the manufacturers not producing quality material, well, blame the free market economy. It's actually kind of surprising that ANYONE still produces decent quality blanks. Taiyo Yuden went out of the manufacturing business because the market for blanks is drying up. So, why shouldn't a corporation, who only cares about profits, make product and charge you for a quality one? They also know most people don't know the difference between junk and quality media, so they prey on people's lack of knowledge to make What's really hard to swallow is when a "good" company like Verbatim also farms out to cheap media. Their Life Series is CMC media, and they do make DVD+R DL. I used to swear by Optodisc 15 years ago. Then, they switched to CMC and I was getting 50% failures. I never looked back to them after that. As LUK said, try the Verbatim DataLife MKM series of DVD+R DL. If you get failures on those, the likelihood is high that the problem is hardware related and may need replacing. You cannot find DataLife series in brick and mortar stores. Only online stores, like Amazon.com where I get mine from in the U.S. As I said, DON'T get Life Series from Verbatim. You want DataLife.
seoras Posted July 16, 2017 Author Posted July 16, 2017 Thanks for the advice re choice of discs. It all seems to lack reiiability and robustness, unlike single layer discs - I rarely have a problem with those.
dbminter Posted July 16, 2017 Posted July 16, 2017 Single layers are just as prone to be problematic if they're cheap, like CMC media. You've probably never encountered CMC's before. Hence why I always use Verbatim DataLife for CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R DL, and BD-R. Unfortunately, Verbatim BD-RE SL are a no go because they farm all of those out to CMC. Multiple layers just always introduce problems. Whether they're DVD or BD-R DL or BD-RE DL, lots of burns here fail at the layer change or Verifies will tend to fail at the layer change. That's why I stopped using DVD+R DL for DVD-9 sized data backups and went to BD-R for them. They burn faster, no 2nd layer to fail, and will last longer.
seoras Posted August 14, 2017 Author Posted August 14, 2017 (edited) Further to my earlier issues with DL discs, I have now tried Verbatim discs as the problem was being attributed to cheap discs. Alas, there has been no success either with the Verbatim discs, Same check condition error when verifying after what seemed to be a successful burn. Despite this, the 2 video files seem to have been written complete to the disc. ??? Correcction: The files being written successfully was illusional. seoras Posted August 14, 2017 Author Posted August 14, 2017 (edited) Burned same iso file on my Dell laptop using ImgBurn - both burn and verification were successful. I even copied the 6.2 Gb file from the newly burned DVD to the hard drive of my laptop. Furthermore, the disc used was one of the cheapos - AOne plus/Richoh. Took the disc back to my desktop PC and tried copying the 6.2 Gb file to my hard drive - failed at around 4Gb just as it did verifying. Checked the original Verbatim disc on the laptop - again failed around 4Gb (to copy) so it looks like a limitation read and write of the exusting LG drive in my desktop PC. The hard drives in question here are not FAT32 and don't have a size limiatation, so it's not that. In fact, on the laptop 6.2 Gb was successfully copied and my desktop PC folder that I've used also has the original 8Gb iso file. The DVD drive is new. Amazon will refund, hopefully. dbminter Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 At this point, about the only way you can really test is if the new drive is bad (It's happened. My last Pioneer was borked right out of the box and had to go back to Amazon.com.) is get an enclosure and put the drive in that. If it fails on the enclosure, it could be the drive as USB will be on a different channel than SATA. However, if your issue is a software related one, something that loads in Normal mode that doesn't in Safe mode, it won't matter. And since it worked in Safe mode but doesn't in Normal mode, you can almost all but certainly rule out that the drive itself is the problem. You could also get an enclosure and try it on your laptop. That would prove if it's the drive that's the problem. As for what loads in Normal mode that could be a problem, Windows is so too terribly complex it's almost virtually impossible to troubleshoot what it could be. You said you built an entirely new system from the bottom up, right, including this new drive? Did you reinstall everything before you tested a new burn or did you do a test burn immediately after building the PC and configuring Windows on its first boot? Are you using the same SATA cable you had before with this drive or did you try a different one? Could be the cable, but since it works in Safe Mode and not in Normal Mode, it's most likely not that. As for what I'd try first, I'd try disabling your antivirus software in Normal Mode and try another burn. AV software generally doesn't interfere with anything, but when I come across any kind of problem, the first thing I test is disabling my AV software.
seoras Posted August 14, 2017 Author Posted August 14, 2017 Drive is connected as the previous one - same cabling. It burns normal single layer DVDS fine. I think that's all that can be reasonably expected of the user so it's being returned as defective. Desktop has the same AV software (Defender) as the laptop so that seems unlikley. I declined the offer of a replacement of the same model for obvious reasons, I am glad I bought it from Amazon because there's no big drama about it.
dbminter Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 Yeah, single layer burns rarely are an issue. Although as sure as I said that, last week, I had a SL fail Verify. It must have been a defective DVD-R, though, because I've not had a single failure of them since. Introducing more than 1 layer (1 layer for DVD DL and up to 2 for BD XL) always causes a problem. And the Write/Verify almost always tends to fail at the layer change. Amazon in the US has a good return policy, too. I got an ASUS and they accepted my returns because on 2 different copies of the same model, it did the same thing: destroyed rewritable DVD+RW and BD-RE DL. AV software generally is not an issue with optical burning problems. It can be but rarely is. I just always test it first. Especially since you're using the same software on the PC that doesn't work and the laptop that does, there's no need to test a burn on that. Since you've tried on the same PC where it was failing in Normal Mode and didn't fail in Safe Mode, the safe bet would be it's something that loads in Normal Mode that doesn't in Safe Mode. What I would do at this point is restore my Windows partition to its factory default installation and try again. Without installing anything else other than ImgBurn. However, you have to be relatively comfortable with imaging your PC, restoring images, juggling partitions, etc. It's not for everyone, but if you're comfortable with it, it can help you isolate what it might be. Especially if this drive had worked at some point before, then something is being introduced somewhere by a software installation, or worse a Windows Update, that is causing the problem. Since it seems to be something introduced at the software level, an enclosure might be a good investment to make for testing. If it still fails on a USB channel and it had failed on SATA but didn't fail on SATA in Safe Mode, then there's some kind of layer in there somewhere causing the issue. Something that loads in Normal Mode that doesn't in Safe Mode.
dbminter Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 Sorry, ignore some of what I said, like you rebuilding an entire system. I think I crossed over this thread with another one in my brain.
seoras Posted August 15, 2017 Author Posted August 15, 2017 Fitted replacement drive (Pioneer) earlier and it successfully copied 6.2 Gb file on the disc successfully written by the laptop. ImgBurn also successfully verified the disc in the new drive. Neither of these actions were successful with the old LG drive, now awaiting return. As far as I'm concerned, the LG drive is defective and that has been the cause of my burn issues. When I come to burn dual layer dic next, I expect a successful burn.
dbminter Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 There used to be an old joke that LG stood for Lucky Good because it was Lucky Good if it worked right. The first LG DVD burner I had was a rebranded drive from IOMega. That thing was wrong out of the box. 50% of the DVD's it burned played back with random skips and pauses on the Playstation 2. That turned me off to LG products for years until I needed a new BD burner and there was an LG one at Best Buy in town. It replaced my LiteOn BD burner that stopped writing BD-RE after 3 months and completely turned me off of LiteOn products. And I think LiteOn no longer makes BD burners, which tells you something. That LG BD burner lasted about a year and then I got a 2nd LG one which lasted about a year. Then I tried a Pioneer. I've had 4 of those. 3 of them performed fairly well, but the last one was borked right out of the box. The only reason I got another LG again was because the latest firmware for Pioneer borks Ritek 8x DVD+RW writes. The LG doesn't. However, the LG has its own issues. It doesn't write BD DL media properly and writes giant floppy formatted BD-RE DL at 1x instead of 2x. And what it does write, the data is corrupt. So, next time, I'm giving Pioneer another shot. I can downgrade the firmware on the Pioneer to the last to the latest revision which does write 8x Ritek DVD+RW correctly.
