agentalbert Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Hello, my first post here. I've looked around and read the FAQ and a few other threads, but it seems the log is needed to learn anything, so I'm starting a new topic as directed. Have recently been getting an error burning either single or dual layer DVD's. Happened with DVD Decrypter (where I would burn .iso files to dvd) and now with ImgBurn which I just downloaded. Win 7 PC. My dvd/cd burning drive shows as ATAPI iHAS124. I found the part of the FAQ here about checking firmware and did successfully update the firmware on mine to the latest version. Did this after the failed dual layer DVD burn. But after the firmware update, I still got the error just burning a single layer DVD. I'm still able to burn CD's just fine. The DVD media I just used reads as "TYG02" which I believe is Taiyo Yuden. That's the sticker that shows on my spindle. Here is the log from the failed single layer burn. Failed at 98%. LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 If it’s failing to burn all dvds, you could try cleaning the drive with a cleaning disc (or manually if you strip it down). Failing that, buy yourself another one.

Failing that, buy yourself another one. Clean with a laser lens cleaning CD? I have one of those, though its old and probably from before DVD burning was common. It says "unique design for CD, CD-ROM & TV Game Players" on it. There are six little fibers that stick out from the bottom, which I gather are supposed to clean the lens. I can try it. Is it common for a drive to lose the ability to burn DVD's but still burn CD's just fine?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 It certainly wouldn't be the first time that's happened, no.
dbminter Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 In fact, it generally happens to me all the time. Also, single layer DVD's burning fine but double layer DVD's failing to burn is also common. So, yeah, CD's still burning fine but DVD's not is not an unusual thing.
agentalbert Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 I'll try the cleaner CD (not expecting much) and try a test burn after that. If it doesn't work, I guess I need a new drive. Thanks for the help.
dbminter Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I never had any luck with cleaning CD's that had brushes on the bottom fixing writing issues. Since your other option is to replace the drive, you could always, also, try getting a can of compressed air and blowing into the drive to clean it out. Since you're replacing the drive anyway, if you blow it into oblivion, what have you lost?
