latheofheaven Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 (edited) Hello! I have been using IMG Burn forever and it has always been perfect. However, something odd has started happening when I just got a new Blu-ray burner. At first the burns seemed to go at full speed and do just fine. Then, oddly, the burn speed would continuously cycle up and down evenly (go from '0' to full speed, then immediately begin to slow back to '0' and repeat until the burn is finished) Since my new LG burner was doing that, I sent it back and got a Pioneer burner. Like I mentioned, at first the first few burns seemed perfectly normal. Now, strangely it is doing this speed fluctuation until finished. Since both drives seemed to do the same thing, I switched the SATA cable from my other DVD drive which I don't use to the new drive, and again, the first few burns were fine, but now this constant fluctuation. I'm kind of doubting that it is IMG Burn, but I have NO bloody idea what could be causing this out of the blue. The burns SEEM to finish and play okay (I can't be sure unless I play the whole disc and files after burning) but, obviously it takes at least twice as long with all the speeding up and down. Any ideas...? Thanks! Here is the log: I 14:19:59 ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 started! LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 Post the log please. If you can attach the graph data file from the problem burns, that would help too.
latheofheaven Posted December 6, 2018 Author Posted December 6, 2018 Sorry, I didn't see any way to 'reply' to my own topic. Soooooo.... I get an answer 5 minutes after posting requesting that I include the log and graph data, which I did. And now, the next day, nothing....??? Uh, it would be kind of nice to get an answer now that I immediately supplied the information of which I was asked, if possible please... Both the log and graph files are on my last post of the same name (except the 'pt. 2' ) Thank you!
LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 If I'm the last person to have replied to a thread, I'm not going to bother checking the thread again. So... don't edit your posts, add an actual reply. Apologies if that wasn't possible. I've now merged your two threads. The graph data looks fine to me. The drive is probably just adjusting itself as it burns - a form of 'WOPC'. You have really old firmware on your drive btw. Update it here - https://www.firmwarehq.com/Pioneer/BDR-209D/files.html
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 Thank you kindly! I was thinking that among some other once in a while issues, perhaps the power supply needs to be replaced / upgraded. I had added a few external HDDs, but they do have their own power. The Hardware Monitor shows my PSU to be 11.8 for both Min / Max, so... But, I will definitely update the firmware right away, appreciate that! I'm going to include the graph for another burn that I did after that one; the playback on that disc is a bit wonky, BUT I am also having some trouble with my OPPO too. I'll include the graph file here if I can. PIONEER_BD-RW_BDR-209D_1.10_WEDNESDAY-DECEMBER-5-2018_2-22_PM_OTCBDR-002-000_MAX.ibg
dbminter Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 As for the firmware update, you might want to check Pioneer's web site for a 1.51 firmware. That web site ImgBurn checks does not list 1.51 firmware for my Pioneer BDR-2209/209M. But, I did find newer firmware on Pioneer's website. Look here: https://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html I think you'll want the firmware package for the BDR-209DBK listing for your drive.
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 Uh, not to appear TOO terribly ignorant, sorry, but I've never had need to do this before... But, if I check the 'Verify' box and burn a Blu-ray like I normally do, and it goes through it's speed up / slow down shenanigans (BTW, after the 1.51 update it does stay at full speed for several seconds now before slowing down, as opposed to before when it upon reaching full speed it immediately slowed down) and it then verifies the burn and HOPEFULLY shows that it is okay (I've never done it or seen it, so I don't know...) then, can I assume if the verify goes well that the burn IS indeed for SURE okay...? Thanks!

dbminter Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 Unfortunately, the sad fact of the matter is a Verify is not a perfect condition for determining if a disc burned okay. I just had a DVD+RW that burned and Verified okay, but would not play at all. I burned the same image again to the same disc and the Verify failed that time, meaning the disc had reached the end of its write life. It had reached the end of its write life on the previous burn but still completed Verify. Some drives like the LG BD NS40 would complete Verifies okay but fail to play properly. They'd reach a bad sector on a DVD+RW and immediately stop playing back. So, as much as it may be inconvenient, the only way you can really determine a good burn is to actually play all the contents.
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 Hmmm... good to know! I wonder if, though, there would be a direct comparison between Rewrites and one-writes? Can one tell by the graph data above, though, if that burn SHOULD be okay...?
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 I DID play the first 10 minutes or so of each of the 3 MKV movie files on the disc, and they SEEMED to be okay to that point on each file...
dbminter Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 While there are fundamental differences in the process of how each media is written, there's no difference in reading. A bad read is a bad read, regardless of the media. I once had a DVD+R DL that passed both Write and Verify, but failed to play back correctly for one sector. In fact, that disc was the ONLY failure I ever had on a DVD+R DL that didn't immediately make itself manifest, e.g. with a failed Write or Verify. e.g. a problem that wasn't directly related to media or a dying drive. If you're just burning MKV files, there's no need to actually play the files to test them. You can open a Command Prompt and use a command called COMP to compare the contents of the MKV files from their source folder against the contents on the disc you burned. While it's more complicated, it takes less time than actually playing all the files.
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 WOW! Now, that is a great suggestion! I was not aware that there was a CMD line option to do this. I will definitely look into that. I also have a new power supply ordered; I should get it tomorrow. I have an instinctive feeling (likely WRONG!) that somehow it might be a 'Power' issue, IDK... Thank you very much for taking the time to explain and to help!

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain and to help! Ah, got it! C:\Windows\system32>fc "C:\Freejack.1992.1080 SONY.mkv" "E:\Freejack.1992.1080 SONY.mkv" Comparing files C:\Freejack.1992.1080 SONY.mkv and E:\FREEJACK.1992.1080 SONY. MKV FC: no differences encountered I'm ASSUMING that that means the burn is okay, right? Thanks! That is a BIG help It takes roughly about 4 minutes + to compare the whole movie. HOPEFULLY, that should solve any worries on my part then... Thank you again!!!
LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 If it burnt and verified ok, the disc is 100% readable and matches the source image. Of course that only applies to the drive that verified the disc, others may not be able to read it.
dbminter Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 Yeah, I mean there's always a slim chance, very slim, that the parts of the disc that contain what you Verified wrote fine but the finer details might not be correct. However, you're just being paranoid at that point, probably. A Verify that completes successfully and COMP's that compare contents successfully are like a 99% certification the disc burned okay.
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 That's great guys, I really appreciate all the help! Kind of curious though... IMG Burn stopped being updated 5 years ago, why does this forum exist and how is it possible that really knowledgeable, helpful guys like you happen to be so handy...??? Is this just fan-based help...?
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 Oh... That must be what 'Author of ImgBurn' means... bloody Americans... Well, it is super nice of you to continue to help people. That is awesome mate!
dbminter Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 Development of ImgBurn still proceeds. It's just at a slower pace as the author does have a life. And, yeah, we're just users turned helpers. Well, some, like myself, started off as beta testers, but we still use the software. And we help where we can. LUK provides the vast majority of help, though, as he wrote the thing so he knows it better than we do.
latheofheaven Posted December 7, 2018 Author Posted December 7, 2018 Well, you guys are absolutely to be highly commended for doing that! ImgBurn is clearly recognized as probably one of THE most important pieces of software of all time! (well, except that cute little program that puts bunny ears on celebrities... :) Deepest respect and thanks guys!
