tampabill Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I am experiencing many coasters lately in burning despite consistent success previously. In the last several weeks, I had been using SONY and TDK DVD-R discs and having no luck with successful burns. I use DVD Shrink and DVD-43 to rip and shrink movies to an ISO file. Then I use IMGBURN to burn to DVD-R. Based on your forum, I purchased Taiyo Yuden DVD-R8x media. So far, I have nothing but coasters with the first five TY discs. I have set the write rate setting to 2x in IMGBURN. Any advice on what I should be doing differently? Here is the log from my last attempt... I 18:43:04 ImgBurn Version 2.1.0.0 started! polopony Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 setting it to 2x wont do anything for you as you can see in Destination Media the drive only sees that media as 4x. Start by looking for a newer firmware for your drive and see if it helps .The drive might just be on the way out

tampabill Posted November 13, 2006 Author Posted November 13, 2006 The drive has been playing dvds perfectly and burning cdrs with no coasters. I just updated the firmware for the drive. Still getting coasters.
Kenadjian Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Try some different media, LG's and TY's don't get along very well, try some Verbs. I know my LG4120 drive didn't like TY's at all.
lfcrule1972 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 I didn't know that ken ! Maybe the Verbs will fix the problem, hey tampabill how old is that drive ?
tampabill Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 Thanks for the Verbatim advice. The drive was bundled with a Dell Dimension 510 which was purchased in October 2005. It has been used heavily since then. Tampabill
Kenadjian Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 I didn't know that ken ! Maybe the Verbs will fix the problem, hey tampabill how old is that drive ? Yeah, quite surprised myself, I know volvo has the same drive and he swears by TY's, go figure. I finally found a shop that stocks these suckers, got all excited and bought some, they were TYGO2, every time I tried to burn them at 8X, bang, instant coaster, put the settings to 4X (The only two speeds supported by my drive) and no problems. I then bought some 16X Verbs, (MCC) +R media, and my drive loves them, lead in time was only 16 seconds, (against 32 seconds for the TY's) and burning speeds of 12X wasn't a problem.

Agreed. Since finding a local distributor for Verbs a few months back, they are all I use. Single or Dual layer. They're brilliant.
