avi to dvd using imgburn

First of all, I just wanna say that I am new to a lot of this so please excuse me if these questions are dumb ones. I recently downloaded a movie that is in avi formatt. I have been trying to get it onto dvd for a day in a half or so and have had no success. The download came with no vob files or anything like that, just a single avi file. Can I burn it to dvd using imgburn and if so, can someone please explain how. I have tried burning to dvd using roxio's DVD builder and it says file is too large. I also tried building iso file using imgburn and that didnt work when i tried burning the built file to dvd. I also have tried other programs with no success. Can someone please tell me what I need to do to get the avi file onto dvd. Your help will be most apprciated and thank you in advance
