the discs you're using Prodisc aren't all that great and choosing 16 X wont help the issue, the discs dont support that speed .Even the best discs Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden show a decrease in quality after 12x the scans back that up.The 2 bad out of 4 is common when using inferior media its hit and miss thats why we recommend the Verbs and Yudens they are A1 media .Quality media ,a good drive and burn everything around 8X is what works for me

is there a reason you are choosing 16x to burn at?

the highest supported speed is 6x

try looking for a firmware update.

try some verbatim or taiyo yuden discs for more consistency

I thought that was the speed that my friend told me to use. I guess I misheard him. I'll take it back to 8x as polopony suggests. Thank you everyone for the help. I'll get the firmware update cornholio7. This drive is in a Dell laptop BTW. I've heard so much about ImgBurn and look forward to learning how to use it correctly. I'll go buy the suggested disc's also. Thanks again everybody.

brand name is not important, the mid, media code (dye type) is the important factor.

As in your case you had some Philip's rw that were prodisc.

The fuji ones you mention if they say prodisc in imgburn then they may be better than the Philip's ones but will be too close to call.

Get some taiyo yuden TYG02/TYGO3/YUDEN000T02 etc the yuden00 etc being +R the ty's are -R.

have a quick look here http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

with the rated speed of the discs its set, say the discs are 8X or 16X its then up to the drives firmeware to have write strategies

that support any given speed .You can have a 16x disc but the drives firmware may not support all speeds ,and you need to set your burn speed to match whats supported

any media you have you can see who the dye manufacturer is by putting a blank in the burner ,there are many "brands " that use the same manufacturer and you're getting the same dye even though you think you have different discs
