DjKilla Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 I keep having my buffers dropping to 0%/emptying and threshold messages. I'm using Taiyo Yuden 16X DVD+R media and I have the most recent firmware update on my Plextor PX-708A. I never have problems burning using other applications/software. LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 DMA issues on the burner would have maxed you out at 2x write speed so we can pretty much rule that out. You could have dma issues with your hdd, or large amounts of general traffic over the bus. Does the buffer bar go down slowly? What size do you have the buffer set to? Have you ever defragged your drive? Going by the times indicated in the log (and assuming a 20mb buffer), your hdd takes roughly between 5 and 10 seconds to fill that buffer which equals 2 - 4mb/s. By anyone's standards, that's pretty pathetic!

By anyone's standards, that's pretty pathetic! The hard drive is set to UDMA-5 and the Plextor is set to UDMA-2. The hard drive has been defragmented and imgburn is running at its default settings. Both the buffer and device buffer in imgburn quickly drops then jumps back to full and repeats again. This doesn't always happen with every burn and when it does, it may be once or as much as 5-6 times. I've got everything unchecked in the 'Startup' tab using msconfig so nothing should be running in the background. I'm not sure how to check what size I have my buffer set to but everything should be at default settings. The Plextor comes with a 2mb buffer. If you need anymore info, please let me know and I'll get it for you. By the way, this has been occuring a lot with this version and the last version of imgburn I believe. The early versions never gave me any problems.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 27, 2007 Posted January 27, 2007 The buffer recovery thing is new - that's why you'd probably not have seen it before. The buffers would have been doing the same thing before, just ImgBurn wouldn't have acted on them being critically low - this newer version does.

So according to your above reply, it's probably the latest version of imgburn that's causing this since it now handles/shows the buffer recovery. Everything I burn works ok it's just that I keep getting buffers dropping and threshold messages. I'm looking forward to the new version of imgburn to be released and hope it resolves the buffer issue everyone seems to be having. Thanks again for the hard work in making imgburn the best!
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 29, 2007 Posted January 29, 2007 It's not going to resovle anything to do with buffers - there's nothing wrong with the current version in that sense. If you don't want the buffer recovery feature enabled, simply turn it off in the settings, it's just 1 checkbox. Your buffers will still jump around and empty out, only you'll get loads of buffer underruns rather than just a few.
