Having problem burning a cd from an iso file. All 4 disks i have tried to burn have failed to verify.

The disks are philips and worked about 90% of the time with a previous drive. Just bought this NEC DVD RW drive and needed software to write DVDs so have tried imgburn. Havent tried to burn a DVD but the CDs are having problems.

Have tried dropping the speed to 1x but this still doesnt help.

Below is log file from my last attempt.

I have read a lot in the forum about the media being a problem or is it more likely that the writer is at fault. It did come second hand from ebay, but externally there appears to be little sign of wear.

Any advice would be appreciated

the write speed doesnt matter , although i dont run at max due to using external drives that dont have fast I/O

on reading your log, that drive doesnt have a write strategy for 1x for that brand of media , as it wrote at an average of 4x anyway ( see below), and as the maximum was also 4x , this makes me think its poor quality media

I 22:44:28 Average Write Rate: 601 KB/s (4.0x) - Maximum Write Rate: 617 KB/s (4.1x)

also the following indicates poor media as well

E 22:47:24 Failed to read Sector 0 - No Seek Complete

it couldnt find the start point of the burn area , probably down to quality of disc.

drop a cd in and choose max as the write speed, and see if it indicates the various speeds it can write the disc at .

im not saying that it will burn at max speed , but would be curious to see what happens if you do, especially with the verify

can only suggest its the media , but DO try burning a dvd and veryfying with it and see what happens, ie if it works or not.

not sure about your firmware version either , it shows as 1.91 which could be a 3rd party one, im not sure, but wait to see if one of the guys with NEC drives can correct me

My first attempt was at Max speed, it caused buffer under-runs but seemed to complete ok. However, verify failed again, but much further through the disk.

Following is the log file from that attempt:

Thanks for your help so far.

latest NEC firmware for that drive is 1.0b

I'd say Volvo made a good call I think thats a Fujitsu Siemens firmware in their box .The 2500 can be flashed with a number of other firmwares I think official NEC and modified ones from Herrie, and Liggy and Dee.You can also flash the 2500 to a 2510 which will allow the burning of Dual Layer discs.I have one and it burns just fine although I dont really use it anymore

Thanks for the info. I had no idea that you could change the firmware. Is it worth a change, could the non-standard firmware be causing the problems?

I think my first disk, the one done at max speed probably would be usable, but as it is a backup copy of an installation disk, i need to be as sure as i can be that it is going to work when i need it to.

The later disks done at slower speeds with the seek error at the start of the disk are not useable.

Thanks for all your help so far

Whoa you say you just bought that drive ? It's a fair few years old now, I have the 2510 that polo mentioned above but it's in honourable retirement at present following several years hard work. :)

there is definetly problems with their shipping department

Sorry just to make it clear, i bought the drive second hand on ebay, so i don't think you can blame anyone but me!!

Seems as if it hasnt been used a great deal and i am not expecting to hammer it. Interesting if it has a non-standard firmware installed though. I will try the firmware recommended later this week if i have time.

Thanks

Sounds like the previous owner installed some modded fw for their own use and then sold it on with that on the drive. You should, depending on the fw installed be able to go back the manufacturers fw tho, sometimes the fw update program doesn't recognise the drive because of the modded fw but until you give it a go you won't know. Worst that will happen is that it just won't update the fw, the drive will be ok as long as you follow the normal precautions. If you're not sure what to do there is a link in my signature to a mini fw update guide posted by Shamus, take a look at that :)

That firmware 1.91 is Fugitsu/Siemens firmware they put Nec's in their computers and you got one of the drives ,flash it you have nothing to lose my 2500 still makes beautiful burns but use good media Verbatim or Yudens

Posted

I have finally managed to change the firmware, but unfortunately this hasn't improved the situation.

Strangely it may be an ImgBurn problem as i have been able to make the cd using a piece of software called Burnatonce and verify it successfully with ImgBurn.

I wonder if i have a setting wrong or if there is something else i can do to improve.

In the meantime i will use Burnatonce for CDs and will experiment with ImgBurn for DVDs.

Posted

I spoke too soon, burnatonce is giving the same problem now.

So now it looks as if it is a media problem.

Can anyone who is using this drive make a recommendation for cost effective CDs

Thanks

I didn't think CD's varied much on quality when compared to blank DVD's. I have used all sorts from Verbatim to OfficeDepot discs and all burn and play back ok in my experience.

That has been my experience with cd writer, this is my first DVD writer.

ok so do you think the drive may be faulty?

Any way to test?

Thanks

Get some taiyo yunden cds, they're not very expensive really. You can get some datasafe taiyo yuden ones for ?12.98 for 100 discs.

Even if you still have problems, at least you'll have good discs for the next drive you buy.

Personally I'd never buy a 2nd hand burner.... there's just no point! You can buy them brand new for less than ?20

i thiink i may have learnt that the hard way.

Thanks for the pointer for the yuden disks. Can you point me towards a source for good low cost drive.

Thanks
