Gidds Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 (edited) When trying to burn an .img file to a disk, the program gets to Verifying Write Parameters" and appears to go no further and hang So i try to cancel out of the burn and it just hangs and i end up having to actually reboot my computer ..frustrated At first i thought the program was just failing all together but i started a burn and just left it to run overnight just to see what would happen and sure enough, the next day the file was burned on the disk and all was well In looking at the log, there was a 3 hour hang, then it did the burn in like 20 minutes and all was well I'm running Windows XP pro with an External Plextor PX-740A type of cd makes no difference and the IDE controllers are set to DMA Anyone have any ideas?? LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Press F8 just before you press the 'Write' button. It'll put some more info in the log and then perhaps we can tell exactly which command your drive is having trouble processing. I would guess that the 3 hour wait is it timing out and then going onto the next command - which it does like and is processing instantly.
Gidds Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 okay, i'll try that ...in roughly 2 more hours i will

dontasciime Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 check to see if there is a firmware update for your enclosure.. you could also switch I/O interface to winaspi32 to see if that fairs any better. you would need winaspi32.dll in system32 folder, you may get away with just having it in ImgBurn's folder Is the plextor set to master in the enclosure ? Are there any newer firmware updates for your writer ? If the usb2 your using is through a hub, addin pci card or front/side usb try using the dedicated ones on the motherboard, try another usb cable to rule it out as well.
Gidds Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 what do you mean by "enclosure" The external plextor, has the most up to date firmware It is connected directly to my computer, no hub and its a USB1 not 2
dontasciime Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Well an enclosure is what you would use to put in a DVD writer (making an external DVD writer). If yours came like that and is plextor's external drive it has a ide to usb controller in it , a chipset to deal with connectivity etc, some you can upgrade to overcome problems. External devices are kinda only worth considering if you have USB 2, is the plextor also capable of firewire if so and you have firewire on your mobo try using firewire instead of usb. just looked on plextors site the drive you list according to them is internal, so i assume now you bought it from ebay or somewhere that picked an enclosure and built it up to sell to you etc. I may be mistaken only going by what i found at plex's site, someone feel free to correct me if i have gone off the path.

The drive/enclosure/drivers are forcefully terminating the command - long before it/they should be. I guess it's then not recovering properly and hence that's why the next command isn't being processed and why ImgBurn then appears to hang. The "The semaphore timeout period has expired" error is all too common on USB drives but nobody really knows why they happen. If you can avoid using USB, do so. If you really are only using USB 1.0, you'd do well to buy a decent USB 2.0 card and plug the drive into that instead. You can't even burn DVD's at 1x over USB 1.0.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 donta, internals and externals often share the same ID string so you can't just go by that - incase you were?
Gidds Posted February 27, 2007 Author Posted February 27, 2007 You know, just when i think I'm getting good/knowledgeable about computers Guys like you come along and make me feel Dumb again #39;( Apparently, it IS listed as an internal drive, i did not know this I'll take a closer look at it when home tonight I knew it would run better / faster plugged into a usb2, and i was going to buy a card for my PC but now I'm thinking I'd be better off buying a firewire card instead and that might fix the trouble, and obviously speed me up at the same time
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Are you running it on a laptop or a normal PC? If it's a normal PC, why can't you just plug it in via IDE? Then you wouldn't have these issues
Gidds Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 its ontp of my PC now but i got an external so i COULD use it on my laptop, tho i've never even bothered to do that it's in a nice "enclouser" now and you would never know from looking at it that it was originally an internal device i've ordered a PCI / Firewire card for $12 that will fix things up ...i Hope btw thanks for all the info
Gidds Posted March 8, 2007 Author Posted March 8, 2007 Well, i got my USB2 / Firewire card, and you were right! tho i haven't tired the USB2 port, it works just great on the firewire hookup Also, I did dig out the box my Plextor External came in The web site was wrong, it was made by, and came from Plextor... Anyhow, thanks for the help The program works like a Champ!
