Hi all,

I have been backing up my XBOX360 games using Verbatim DVD+R discs without any problems. A couple of days ago I ran out of Verbatim discs so I went and purchased a new box of 5 discs.

What is happening now is that it will not burn any discs. Once I click the start button it seems to spin the hell out of the blank media. It stalls for a long time and eventially I get any error message. Please find my log file below.

I am using an LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B dvd writer. I thought it might be my computer, so I took the burner out of my machine and put it in another pc and got the same problem.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't realise they were different discs boss, I just thought that some drive/fw combinations allowed you to burn the Verb DVD+R DL's faster than 2.4x. :/

I always stick to 2.4x for my burns anyway.

Posted
I personally prefer the 2.4x rated verbs over the 8x ones.

8x ones seem to need newer firmware etc to work properly.

Hmm ... the only DVD+R Verbs I can find in my local shops are 16x ..... what do you guys think of those ?

I haven't used any yet - I'm still using up my last few DVD-R Verbs (which are also 16x, and which have been fine).

BTW: regarding the "Drives & Media" forum : I haven't yet graduated to the point where any of the stuff in there is remotely comprehensible to me. Noting the forum motto "We waste money so you don't have to" :) I'd really like to begin understanding all the graphs & stuff ... is there a good beginners' guide ? Also, you guys mostly just post the data, without any qualifying summary statement such as "Great discs", "Lousy discs", "Only usable at < 8x speed", "Don't seem to work in LG drives", etc., etc. I've gained some insight by reading the accompanying ImgBurn logs looking for error messages, but often there are no such errors - just data which only means something to those with the right kind of PhD. Is it possible for you to post a summary, or would that be too "contentious" ?

For instance, my work just bought a load of Datawrite "Titanium" DVD-R 8x discs, so I looked in the forum to find out what to expect ... but ended up none the wiser

There is a guide created by Cornholio in the same forum that explains how to interpret the DVDinfoPro graphs, if you look at his example and then the scans in the media/drives forum it should all become a little clearer :)

As for posting an opinion, we don't do that. For me there is no point, the graphs and the quality score % tell the story for us. Basically any graph that has red in it is not a good sign and for a quick and dirty guide the quality % score should be above 90% (higher the better) for quality discs... What you will see when looking at the results is that some drives burn Media ID's (dye manufacturer) better than others, it's common to see score of 90+% on one drive and 80% on another, therefore our opinion would not be as valid unless you were using the exact same drive.

As for the discs your work bought you need to find out what the Media ID is for them really, for instance the ones in the forum that we tested are either TTH02 or Prodisc, once you know this take a look at their results.

Damn forgot to say that I have some Verb 16x DVD+R's at home and they are good discs - what is the media ID on the ones you bought ?

scuzzy, this thread is about Verbatim double layer discs, not single layer ones.

16x doesn't even come into the equation just yet!

What I'm saying is that I prefer the 2.4x DL media (MKM-001-00) to the 8x DL media (MKM-003-00).

Sorry, so it is .. didn't read the post text closely enuff - the subject didn't say DL.

Thanks for steering me off the rocks again. Getting there

BTW lfc: my DVD+R 16x are "MCC-004-00" (and thanks for the DVDinfoPro explanation)

Yeah i was thinking the same thing as LUK. Was kinda curious because i thought u were also talking about 16x DL disks.

Wouldnt matter anyway as i hav the same burner as you and its max writing speed for DL' are 4x.

Sounds kinda slow by todays standards but like most Team members say,

burning at 2x on Verbatim DL will giv u a quality disk.

I usallly watch an episode of 24 when i do...

p.s. I had to learn the hard way but stay away from umediscs media. Will not work on that drive.
