mwja627 Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I was told to burn at nothing but 2.4x so i changed the option in imgburn to 2.4x. Problem or not so much of a problem I picked up 8x verbatim dl +r discs Which Works Great. now when I burned my backup it burned at 3.8x not the 2.4x i set it for ive had no problem with the backup but this is one game just dont want to have problems in the future with other backups. It nice that it backsup in 25 minutes compared to 45 minutes it was set for 2.4x but imgburn burnt it at 3.8x just wondering why that would be. Thanks In Advance J.T.
dontasciime Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 post the log as this will include burner type etc
Shamus_McFartfinger Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 It depends on your drives' firmware and also the media used. If the media tells the drive it doesn't support 2.4x then it won't burn at 2.4x. The drives' firmware (internal software) also has to support this speed. If 2.4x isn't in the list of allowable speeds, again, it won't burn at that speed. Information telling what the drive and media are capable of is displayed in the right side window when in WRITE mode. mmalves Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I 17:33:02 Destination Media Type: DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-003-00) (Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x)I 17:58:46 Average Write Rate: 5,259 KB/s (3.8x) - Maximum Write Rate: 5,693 KB/s (4.1x) As you can see the slowest speed is 4x, and your drive wrote the media at 4x, so there's no problem. The slowest burning speed you can get is a combination of what your burner and your media allows, so that's why some drives are able to do 2.4x while others aren't.
necrocracker Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Your drive only supports burning at 4x, 6x and 8x to this media. Since you set requested to burn at 2.4x, your drive is setting to the closest supported speed, 4x. A drive can't usually burn at the requested speed for the entire process so the average is usually lower than the max. In this case 3.8x. You could look to see if there is a firmware update for your drive that would allow for other burning speeds if you are concerned about it. Normally on DL media, the slower the burn the better. This allows the drive to spend more time burning each pit on the disc which creates a better quality burn. If you get good burns with 4x, that suits your purpose, then use 4x. As long as the disc verifies correctly and plays ok on your equipment, then that's all that really matters. I burn all my DL discs at 4x and rarely verify. I'm a little impatient sometimes.
