I have recently begun having problems using my SonyDRU-710a. The drive will not acknowledge that a blank dvd disc has been inserted. I have updated the drive's firmware, I have searched for virus'. I have installed NEro's and Adaptec's ASPI and none of that has helped. I have tried 3 different brands of DVD + R medium, I have un-installed and re-installed the drive. Nothing has helped. The drive plays DVD commercial movies just fine.

So to double check the DVD media, I took a disc to my wife's fairly new Dell laptop and that too would not acknowledge that a blank disc had been inserted.

I have read a half dozen tech sites this past few days and none of the solutions have helped. One I haven't tried yet was to un-install IE 7 and WMP 11. Both of our machines are SP2 XP and have IE7 and WMP 11 installed.

I also have some gaming software that I 'thought' might have copy protection that was interfering with my drive, but since my wife's laptop does not have any Starforce or Sony CP on it...I guess that cannot be a cause.

here is my imgburn log.

I 22:50:05 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started!

With ImgBurn in Write mode and a blank media inserted on your drive, could you copy and paste the information shown on the right side of ImgBurn's window?

Also, while you're at it, please go to Tools, then 'Filter Driver Load Order', click the Clipboard button and paste here.

By the way, do you have Alcohol 120% installed? If you have enabled its 'Ignore Media Type' function, it'll make every program think that your media is a DVD-ROM.

Posted

The 3 brands might have all been the same media ID, hence not really any different at all.

If you load the program AND THEN insert the disc, does the message in the status bar change to 'Logical Unit in process of becoming ready', before then going back to 'medium not present' ?

It would certainly appear as though the drive just doesn't like those discs.

that old drive's firmware is almost 2 years old, but supports that mid code

try some better disks or one from another part of the spindle, crosscheck against the laptop

Please post your log file.

several logs listed above. about the 4th message, my second, in the thread. I have only gotten the drive to 'see' the disc once this past week. And that wasn't enough to get to the burn process. I got a Power Calibration Error that time. Every other time, the message at the bottom of the IMGburn display was Media Not Present.

Tried Verbatium, TDK, two different Generiics, The Verbatium disc was -R the rest were +R. I may have to admit defeat.

Un-installed IE7 and WMP11 as well.

you got a log from using the verbatim ones though

oh sorry, not much of a log appears since the status line still indicates: "device not ready: Medium not present."

here is what there is of the log with a Verb disc in the drive.

I 09:58:32 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started!

I 09:58:32 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 2)

I 09:58:32 Initialising SPTI...

I 09:58:32 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...

I 09:58:53 Found 1 CD-RW and 1 DVD?RW!

I did get a fairly long NERO log, but that won't be much help here. And the error portion only came near the end of the log.

check out THIS from the FAQ page . make note of the bit about seeing what else has a handle on the drive................see if that helps

just trying to see what the media code is for those verbs

This is cut from the Nero log, I'm 99% this was the TDK media and not Verbatium...I don't think I've gotten a Verb to load yet...Will keep trying...

This may or may not make sense, since it IS from another product.

Yep. We'll need a log showing failures with the Verbatim media when you get one. In the meantime, toss these CMC disks into the bin. They aren't worth the frustration, time or effort to bother using. They are that bad.

Well for what it is worth, my son recently installed a newer Sony DVD the DRU 830 and when I put the verbatium disc in that with nero 7(all he had on his box) the disc was recognized and the burning process took off perfectly. I guess...I'll have to swallow hard and accept that even tho the hours on this drive fall far far far far short of the MTF, this drive is toast. I may keep it around as a player at least and a cdburner....grmble grumble....gnash...gnash...

Thanks everyone
