Hi there Guys, i'm completely new to this entire burning thing and i was hoping you would be so kind as to point me in the right direction.

Basically, after a huge amout of searching and messing about, i've finally managed to download shrek 3 for my young daughter (she loves donkey) .

However what has downloaded it a set of files, but i don't know what the process is for getting these onto DVD.

The top level directory contains one folder and one file, the file being "Shrek The Third [PC][DVD][English].iso" the folder is called "Shrek 3-030207-0005", now in that folder is another folder called "VIDEO_TS", and within that are files called "VIDEO_TS, VTS_01_0, VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2" etc

Now being completely simple as i am, and expecting things just to work i loaded up Imgburn and navigated and selected the ISO file, the burn took place, and the verify seemed to be okay too, but when i insert the dvd in the drive, it reports no data, with a type of "RAW".

I'm wondering whether i have included all of the files required? Do i need to include the VIDEO_TS, VTS_01_0, VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2" etc as well?

Also if anyone could recommend a free dvd burner as well, i'd be most grateful.

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

I've got to be honest here, you're treading on VERY thin ice. There are more and more legal ways of downloading stuff these days but the majority are still illegal. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I'll give you some clues on general burning practises.

An ISO is a disc image. It should be in a format such that when it's written to the disc (without any manipulation) it just works straight off. Obviously that's not the case here so I'd have to guess the image is faulty.

However, there are other things to take into consideration. Are you using decent media? Does your player support that type of media? Did the disc burn AND verify without errors? Can the PC play whatever's on the disc? Can the PC see what's on the disc if you look at it via 'My Computer' or 'Explorer' ?

Next, if you have a VIDEO_TS folder and some DVD Video files (the VTS_XX IFO/BUP/VOB ones), you can refer to the Guides forum and read one of the guides in there to see how to burn them.

If the image is faulty, you could do a completely unique thing....something really outa left field...

Go buy the DVD.

Thanks for the advice Lightning.

ImgBurn appeared to have written the full 2gig iso file to the disc, it's verify also reported back as successful. However, within windows explorer the disc reports as 0 bytes (in raw format).

I'm just wondering if i even need that iso file, given that the TS_Video files are all present and play directly from my PC (i'm trawling through the guide forums currently - thanks for the pointer).

0 bytes or 0 bytes free?

Again, giving you the benefit of doubt, you can load the ISO into Imgburn which will happily burn it onto a disk for you. You can also change the output from ImgBurns' build option to write the files directly to disk instead of creating an ISO first.

That'd be 0 bytes written. Yeah...that's what i did, basically loaded up Imgburn and pointed it at the iso file and away it went. The burn went through without error, it ejected the disc, took it back in, and done a verify and that completed without error.

To save us playing a virtual guessing game, would you please post the log of the burn? Help Menu > Logs

You want to webex in and have a look instead

Sure will do, i'm still at work though - i'll post it up in about an hour or so. I do appreciate this.

ok so that's an image you've built yourself yeah? and now you're just trying to burn it?

If you followed the guide in the Guides forum (as suggested in my previous post) there shouldn't be an issue.

The burn + verify went fine so there's certainly no problem there.

That does actually work!! Great!! However, playback is a little choppy. Perhaps as you intimated earlier it could be down to the media or the burn speed.

I made a new iso from the T_Video directory that was included in the rip. Strange thing is though the original iso from the rip when burnt to disc still refuses to work (0 bytes, raw format) despite ImgBurn saying pretty much what the above does. Is the original iso included likely to be better quality that the T_Video files?

Is it common practice to include both iso and T_Video files in a rip? Presumably i'm not missing out on anything, quality wise? What is considered the best media format to get rips in, for playback?

Genuine TYG02 disc are about the best you'll get. No need to burn at 4x though, they're brilliant (maybe even better?) at 8x.

I would guess the original ISO is just rubbish and full of nothingness. Forget about it.

Please keep your talk on 'rips' and whatever for another forum. I don't want it discussed on here.

Just so you know, please don't edit the log if you have problems. What may seem inconsequential to you can actually provide us with information about your system, which helps us help you. :)

I like games....and long walks on moonlit beaches. :D

I like cream colored ponies......and crisp apple struddels (?).

Anyway...okay thanks for the advice on media - in fact a big thank you all round i think  . I've pushed my luck far enough - it's obvious i need to seek advice elsewhere regarding rips etc :pirate: . I was completely unaware of the sensitivity surrounding this subject on these forums. I assumed it was a given, and that everybody does this from time to time, so sorry about that.

Stay safe
