Hello! I have been copying DVD's for a while now, originally with Nero... and now, more happily with Img Burn combined with a ISO builder, and DVD shrink. In the past i have had no problems burning DVD's, however i recently bought a SONY DRU-830A (USB external) to speed up the process and now Most all of my Movies fail to burn. I am on my second Burner, 5th different USB port, using DVD-R's and am not sure where to turn next. When using Img Burn (or Nero), the Burner seemingly randomly works, and then doesn't, when it gets a few weeks old it rarely works. Is this just a crappy burner... (bloody expensive if it is...) or am i doing something totally wrong here.

The error I get from Img Burn, returns the following log entry:

Thanks Bob.

Switch your media from RitekF1 to Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

Lower your write speed to 2x on USB 2.0 (1x for USB 1.1).

Check for firmware update.

Use build mode (see guides) - no need for ISO.

Ok, can you help me out in buying the correct disks...? And i still don;t understand why these disks randomly don;t work any more... I have 50 of em sitting in a stack with perfect quality movies on em.

Checked firmware, Write speeds and tried building my image with Img burn itself, to no avail.

thanks,

Bob

Well, that's the thing with iffy media. They are iffy. Sometimes they works, other time no. Cheap? Sure but if you throw away one out of 2, then maybe not so cheap. Plus they degrade faster. You may find really cheap media is gone in under a year.

So, go to a reputable store (or online) and buy the suggested disks.

If you wanna see the many tests we have done here, go to our Drives and Media section.

well basically usb is a problematic interface, the cpu has to do almost all the work, and to top that off it's a shared resource

reviews of that burner were good, they reported a firewire interface also, it's a better option if you have it than usb

I have 50 of em sitting in a stack with perfect quality movies on em.

whenever you get into quality scanning and data preservation for the long haul, you'll reevaluate that statement

it might take a year or two, it did for me

here's a pretty picture of one of my first memorex burns(culled the disk out about a 1 1/2 years ago)

Is it live? Is it Memorex? no it's almost dead
