John Schneider Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 I was trying to burn a DVD ISO image (Windows Longhorn Beta 1) to a DVD -R disc on a Memorex Double Layer, Dual Format +/-, internal IDE DVD recorder, using 1.1.0.0, but got the errors "Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format". I tried it two more times, using lower write speeds, but still no go. I then loaded and used the OEM version of Nero that came with the drive (I don't like, and don't want to use Nero) just to see if it worked, and it did work fine. I'd rather use (and support!) ImgBurn. Here is the log file: I 10:48:29 ImgBurn Version 1.1.0.0 started! I 10:48:29 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 2) I 10:48:29 Initialising SPTI... LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 2, 2006 Posted January 2, 2006 John Schneider...... not a fan of Smallville are you?! Hmm that is an interesting problem. I have no control over these error messages, your drive just doesn't seem to want to burn those discs. Without being sat infront of your pc and comparing every command Nero sends to every command ImgBurn sends, there is no real way for me to help you. Try in 'Test Mode' and it would probably work ok. That shows you my program's logic is ok but the drive really just can't do a real burn on the media - at least not when told to do so by ImgBurn. A quick search on Google finds people (at afterdawn) with the same drive / media (roughly), and it failing in all programs. So I wouldn't be suprised if your Nero burn was something of a fluke. Try something other than CMC media, they're a massive source of problems, especially in LiteOn drives (yours is an OEM LiteOn 1633). Take a look at the LiteOn subforum at cdfreaks.com and see what they recommend.
chewy Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about601...b0051a28ef72ded a lot to chew, chewy
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Not sure how that helps with this issue, but thanks anyway?!
polopony Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I 10:53:34 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: CMC MAG. AE1) (Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x) Lightning said it ,and I think you should really start here find better media get some Verbatim or Taiyo Yudens theres way too many problems with the CMC stuff and between this forum and Decrypters (R.I.P.) I'd have to say that this media was responsible for too many errors more than any other dye and most people who came on and changed media had great results
lfcrule1972 Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 CMC MAG - it really is as shit as its reputation......
BurnerFreak Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 CMC MAG - it really is as shit as its reputation...... No believe me its worse than sh1t Try using Disks with the TYG02 or MCC 03RG20 dye I have had great success with these, over 99%, have a look at cdfreaks media forums for the different dye types and burn results I had a 1000 Datawrite Titanium DVD-R's with the CMC Dye and was running at about 38% coasters............ Absolute Crap, they should sell em as beer mat coasters for a penny each and if you get a burn then you have had a result!

I'd have to say that this media was responsible for too many errors more than any other dye and most people who came on and changed media had great results Be carefull as its not the make ie verbatim its the dye ie cmc,tyg02, mcc etc I am sure i saw some verb 8x dvd-r with cmc dye the other day, i may be wrong though! A good Verbatim is here http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=221 A good cheap disk is the Datasafe 16x DVD-R MCC03RG20 disks here http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=198 And if you have big wallet then just buy Taiyo Yuden as these are always 100% excellent
lfcrule1972 Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I definitely don't have a big wallet but after my old faves Ritek let me down I switched to TYG02's and wished I had done it ages ago ! The way I look at it is that I want these burns to last and why risk them on crappy dye ? My PS2 and all our players (inc the portable one) love the TY's !
volvofl10 Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 do you know how long nero took to make that sucsessfull burn ? dont believe the write speeds that nero tells you , it lies was it at a lower speed than the 8x attempt with ImgBurn ?

And if you have big wallet then just buy Taiyo Yuden as these are always 100% excellent very true about the dye thats what its about Verbatime with CMC MAG dye thats not funny at all ,I think you're mistaken ,when you're a manufacturer with a reputation as good as Verbatim would you risk it with a CMC I dont think so check around and see if you can find some info on the verbs with CMC and post back I reccommend Yudens and Verbs all the time and I sure wouldn't do so if the verbs were cmc crap Son of a bitch ,I did a Google and sure enough Verbatim 'Pearl White" discs are being made with CMC SHIT this really sucks big time I 'll be real carefull when I get my next batch of Verbs if they're CMC back they go no if ,ands or buts .Maybe its time to call Meritline and order Yudens ,I still have about 25 Verbs (mcc ) and 25 Yudens left Edited January 4, 2006 by polopony

crockettmann Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Sorry to hear of probs with Ritek. Guess I have been lucky-I only use Ritek Ridata G05's from Meritline. $36.99 for 100 and I don't seem to get bad burns unless I've been messing with my system. Been burning for about a year and they seem to last.
lfcrule1972 Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I used to use loads of Ritek G04's and G05's but late last year the full face printable G05's went bad...... In two spindles of 50 I had approx 20 bad burns in each. Luckily my supplier kindly sent replacement TYG02's and I have never gone back. Prior to the last 2x spindles of Riteks being poor I had experienced maybe 5-6 per 50 failing to burn....
BurnerFreak Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Verbatime with CMC MAG dye thats not funny at all ,I think you're mistaken ,when you're a manufacturer with a reputation as good as Verbatim would you risk it with a CMC I dont think so check around and see if you can find some info on the verbs with CMC and post back I reccommend Yudens and Verbs all the time and I sure wouldn't do so if the verbs were cmc crap Its NOT FUNNY at all See http://www.svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=727 You REALLY Must check the DYE the manufacturer has outsourced their disks to as its no longer a world of I USE VERB BECAUSE THEY ARE EXCELLENT QUALITY! now the Verbs with CMC dyd may be ok, i havent used any myself or read any posts either way about them ! But looking at other reports of cmc dyed disks id recommend steering clear!
lfcrule1972 Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I am sure polo will - he hates CMC MAG shite as much as the rest of us !
John Schneider Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about601...b0051a28ef72ded a lot to chew, chewy Thanks for the link chewy, but installing the 'horn is not a problem. Once I got the disc burned, the install went fine.

At first, I didn't understand what you meant by "Try something other than CMC media", but now I get it. Is there a way to tell from the label if a disc is "CMC" before I buy it? Thanks to everyone else too for the education on discs. Never had problems using the cheap CDs, but I guess with DVDs, there is less room for error. John
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Best thing to do is buy them from an online retailer. Most of the decent ones will quote the discs 'Manufacturer ID' alongside the other info (i.e. the price!).
sillysally Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Did by any chance you use PgcEdit or something like it to set the LB? If so was there more than one choice for the LB? Had that problem even though i do use Verbatim r9 disc and by viewing the LB choices i changed the LB and all went well.
volvofl10 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 In all fairness to nero, it's accurate! my comment was based on what nero was like a year ago. in "another " forum, there was an unbelievable amount of members who claimed they was getting write speeds of 8 speed and some 12x with nero, when there drive didnt even support 8 or 12 x ( this after seeing there log files with "another " burning prog) . when they was asked to see how long it had ACTUALLY took , the time matched 4 speed times even though nero reported to be writing at 8/12 x . Thats not to say nero has'nt got better in that time, it possibly has , but i only use nero for data discs myself and wouldnt have noticed the improvement
lfcrule1972 Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I remember those posts too volvo - you're right there was a lot of claims of outrageous burn speeds when using the older Nero......
chewy Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 nero is safe to use when it reaches this level 5.5.xxx 6.6.xxx 7.7.xxx before that level of maturity you are just paying for the priviledge of betatesting
