Dick Cheney Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 (edited) Hi all, My project has been to back up my 7 seasons of Star Trek: TNG, it's pretty old now and some of the discs are very worn. I had great success burning seasons 1-5 onto Verbatim DVD+R DL, then ran into problems with seasons 6 and 7. Someone on this forum advised me to reduce burn speed to 2.4x (slowest), that worked for a couple more DVDs. Now I have ruined 4-5 discs trying to burn season 6 and 7 DVDs, getting the same result each time: either an immediate "Power calibration error" or a "DVD+R DL boundary" error. I tried borrowing clean discs from my public library and burning them (after all I own the master set), but amazingly the SAME errors crop up! My burner is a Pioneer DVR-110D, updated with LATEST firmware. I have pasted logs from two such failures below. Would appreciate ANY IDEAS, THANKS in advance!! blutach Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Your drive can't read the blank. Either the drive is on the way out (try a drive cleaner) or you have run into a rare case of a bad batch of Verbatims. Regards

Either the drive is on the way out (try a drive cleaner) or you have run into a rare case of a bad batch of Verbatims. Regards There's nothing else it could be?? I thought Pioneer drives are very good. Mine is maybe close to 3 years old... is there a highly recommended replacement drive?
kevdriver Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 DC, I too have a preference for Pioneer drives, however, drives can go south at any time. As Blutach said, either your Verbs are a bad batch or more then likely your drive needs replacement. Just go and replace it with a new pioneer drive. There are many good burners on the market, but the choice is always yours.

There are many good burners on the market, but the choice is always yours. Is there any way to determine whether it's the drive or the Verbatim disks? I got the Verbatims as part of a 100-disc package, seems more likely it's the drive by default, I guess.
kevdriver Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 DC, The logfile is showing that the burner can't read your Verbs, You could buy another single verb or small cake of them and try the burn again, if the same happens, it looks like the drive is on route to heaven. If it should burn alright to the different batch of verbs, then perhaps its a bad batch of verbs your working with ( I've never hit more then 1 bad verb out of a couple hundred before. )Honestly think its your drive starting to die though.
dontasciime Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Where did you buy the 100 dual layer verbs from ?

Dick Cheney Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 Does it say where they were made on packaging I'll have to get back to you on that tonight, when I go home. Are you suggesting these are fake Verbatims or something??
dontasciime Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 just wondering if they are the ones they switched production to in either singapore or India can't remember which

I am on the last cake, so I don't know if the first 80 were Singapore or not... Any way to know if your Verbatims are India or not?? No way to avoid it??

[EDIT] 023942953104 this was code of made in Singapore in JAN 2007 I just find it crazy these discs straight up DON'T WORK, it's not like they'll burn but fail earlier, or burn fine but not play. Most of the complaints I read online are about the Indian Verbs failing after being burned. It's way past the 30-day period or whatever but I guess I'll email Supermediastore...
polopony Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Supermediastore... I've dealt with them in the past and they tried to play cute on some discs I ordered ,wasn't what I wanted and had a hard time getting an RMA from them . Never used them again New Egg and Meritline always give me great products and service
kevdriver Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Found the India Verb ones here on sale at Staples... dvd-r lightscribes......... great price but stayed far away from them, I'll stick with the standard Taiwan produced Verbs. Girl at counter told me the lightscribes were on sale, I told her they were shit and she said she was wondering why they weren't selling even on sale.........

Girl at counter told me the lightscribes were on sale, I told her they were shit and she said she was wondering why they weren't selling even on sale......... Went to my local Best Buy, they had exactly ONE cake box of 20 Verbatims from Singapore left. Using these babies, I got NO problems burning. Someone seriously needs to kick a Verbatim executive in the balls. The reason anyone gave a shit about their company was that they made more expensive but high-quality products. Try to cut costs and degrade your products, you just joined the crowd of other media losers. I wonder where that leaves us when we need more discs... seems like these Indian Verbs are flooding everywhere. Anyone got a good place where you can actually ASK specifically for Singapores? sorensen Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 (edited) Have been using Verbatim DVD+DR DL made in India here and made about 25 discs, no problems. Writers used are: LG GSA-H22L and Pioneer 212D SATA drive. Can anyone link me to some articles stating that the Verbatims made in India really are inferior? If there's one with hard numbers/facts that would be better. Are they inferior in that they often fail during the burn or are they failing at a later date? The reason I asked is that one moderator from another disc-burning site was praising the "Made in Singapore" stuff like it was gospel, his fear of anything "not made in Singapore" is similar to those people who are very afraid of germs. Very eccentric. He kept repeating this stuff in most of his posts. DC, did you find out whether it was your drive or the disc that caused the problem? To be honest I'm disappointed at the general trend that DVD and CD writer drives don't seem to last very long. I had a highly recommended Liteon CD Writer failed after about 1.5 years, although it wasn't used heavily. It still reads well, but any CD it made had a fatal CRC error which made them useless. dontasciime Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I can only say that recently there have been a number of users using made in India Verbs with write errors from the off or half way through or failing at verification stage. Using writers that I and many members on here own and burn Singapore Verbatim all day long (I have out of at least 200 only had 1 fail . Only 1 failed to verify after burn. I have never bought Verbatim DL made in India so maybe I am jumping the gun by looking at all the other users who are using it and having problems whilst using the very same make writer I have and the same firmware on their drive that I use. If your happy with the media and you Verify them straight after burn then keep using them.
GDTMF Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I´ve heard that Verbs, Fuji and Sony discs are all made at the same factory in Taiwan.. Each company then just put on a label or print and they are good to go! An account manager from Fuji told me, that these three "primebrand" disc should be just as good as the other.. Any thoughts on that? I have used Fuji DVD-R for Wii backup and they work just as fine as Verbs..
blutach Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 The dye is important, too. Well, verrrry important. So, while the manufacturing techniques might be the same, the raw material may differ. You can refer to our rather exhaustive media tests in the media and drives forum. Regards

Regards http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=2310 I think the above is the only media-test thread for Verbatim +R DL? It looks good (from a n00b point of view, mine) ..... all of them showed no major PIF spikes. But the thread didn't say if they were Singapore Verbatims or Indian ones? I did a PI/PO test with DVDInfoPro on my Made in India Verbatims and noticed: I burnt 2 discs, both at 2.4x, both with the same drive, but different program 1. The one with CloneCD 5.3.1.0 made a lot of error spikes (max PIF spike was about 200) 2. One burnt with Nero 6.6.15 had a max PIF spike of about 10 Interesting..........
