Hey! I'm getting the same message: Device Not Ready (Medium Not Present - Tray Closed).

I just burned a slew of Memorex DVD-R 8x brand on my DVD-RW Optical Drive and and ran out of that brand, so I started using the TDK DVD-R 16x brand and the message appears only when I use the TDK 16x brand, not the Memorex 8x brand. I had one extra blank Memorex disc laying around, so I put it in and Wah Lah! It read it just fine. I don't know the solution, but my guess is that it has something to do with the speed of the media, and nothing to do with the Optical Drive or the brand (since both brands are of high quality). Does anyone have any advice on how to solve this problem? Any help would be much appreciated! In addition to posting your helpful answers here, an email directly to me would be much appreciated: - THANKS in advance!!!

i do have a disc in the drive and its the same exact disc that i used the previous 6 times. It is a maxell DVD-R, 4.7 gb 16x

is there someplace i can go to see what types of discs my burner supports?

I also downloaded all the drivers off of the dell website.

Eject the disc and reinsert it. If the drive won't recognise it then there's nothing anyone can do about it I'm afraid.

By 'drivers' I assume you mean firmware? It's the drives firmware that would fix issues like this.
