Bob The Savage Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I have an external DVD burner, and for a while was using AnyDVD + DVD Shrink + IMG burn very happily. Recently all my DVD's fail to burn. I hoped it was bad disks, so i bought a spool of Verbatim. None of them appear to work. Log is as follows: I 15:25:02 Operation Started! I 15:25:02 Building Image Tree... spinningwheel Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 W 15:31:23 Failed to Write Sectors 448 - 479 - The semaphore timeout period has expired. Happens with external burners depending on the chipset that is contained in the burner housing. You are on USB 2.0 plugin correct? Can you mount the drive internally within your machine?
Bob The Savage Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 no, fraid its a "outside only" kinda deally. Really a very good Sony... but o well. Any way to remedy this, without getting an internal drive?
blutach Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Then I'd usually advise you to write slower. But 4x is the slowest on that media. Try to find some high quality media that you can write at 2X on. Regards
chewy Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 I would have used the build on the fly option? Destination Free Space: 5,867,712,512 bytes (5,730,188 KB) (5,595 MB) (5 GB) where's the first of the log? ram available etc? usb is an very system intensive operation, not too good if the source files are heavily fragmented and all the available swap file space is taken up by the iso creation just a wild stab in the dark
Bob The Savage Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 I've tried writing really slow speeds, but doesn't seem to help. I build the ISO with IMG burn, and then Burn. got 2gbs of ram, and almost all of it is available for the burn. thanks for info, may not be sophisticated enough to take advantage of all you suggestions. anything easy i could be missing?
dontasciime Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 try changing the usb 2 cable. If your using SPTI which is default for ImgBurn and Xp try changing to WNASPI32 in ImgBurn tools/ settings/ I/O Switch back to SPTI if you already switched to WNASPI32 at some point You will need to place wnaspi32 into ImgBurn folder or system32 or both. If you have nero installed search your drive for wnaspi32 if not download it from nero's site. Check ide cable inside enclosure is in fully , see who make the logic chip inside enclosure as it may be programmable therefore you can update it with a newer firmware which might fix the issue. If you have had this drive a long time and you have never ever seen the Semaphore Timeout Error the drive may have had it or the cables etc. Maybe also check to see if there is a firmware update to your writer.
Bob The Savage Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 Its an External Drive... I am Using USB 2.0 I did all the nero bizness, but its a USB drive...
spinningwheel Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 You have the latest firmware and have tried the slowest speeds possible for your device/media combination so that eliminates one causal part of the problem. Did it just start with this batch of discs? Approx how many discs have you burned with the drive? Did you install any programming between the last successful burn and the first failure? Open IB>tools>driver load order and post a screenshot of the result.
chewy Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 try to make some more room on the hard drive, run disk cleanup, take out the trash, empty norton's protected recyling bin if used now when you have video file set don't make an iso(that just wastes space) see the guide about building and outputing to dvd burner (building and burning on the fly) you were writting a 4+ gig iso to your hard drive with only 5 gigs free space, the problem is that 5 gigs was probably scattered all to hell in small chunks, then to read that iso the computer had to work it's butt off finding it all while writting to an external usb burner that uses a lot of cpu cycles I hope this makes sense to you
dontasciime Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Its an External Drive... I am Using USB 2.0 I did all the nero bizness, but its a USB drive... it still uses an ide cable inside enclosure. Did you try replacing the usb cable as well ? when you say you did all the nero bis what do you mean, post a log of it failing with wnaspi32 as the IO
Bob The Savage Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 You have the latest firmware and have tried the slowest speeds possible for your device/media combination so that eliminates one causal part of the problem. Did it just start with this batch of discs? Approx how many discs have you burned with the drive? Did you install any programming between the last successful burn and the first failure? Open IB>tools>driver load order and post a screen shot of the result. Yep, updated firmware/drivers for Burner. No, On the previous Batch of disks i had same issue, but it only started about 1/2 way through spool - this prompted me to snag a new higher quality spool (DVD-R's) Tons of programs I'm afraid. Several Games, and a couple of tools. And due to the failure of the drive to burn, My DVD folder is filling up, round 30gigs in there right now, which is causing major space issues on HD's. I'll look for the guide you mentioned, and report back dontasciime: Thanks, but im not really ready to void the warranty on this puppy yet. And by Nero Buisness i meant: I found the wnaspi32 dll, and put it both in the IB folder, and system32 folder. However when i tried to which to the Wnaspi32 option on the I/O tab; IB can no longer find any drives. I can't post log of it filing cause i can't begin. I will also try replacing the USB cable.
Bob The Savage Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 Ok, i tried the buring right form VIDEO_TS's guide, but same error is returned.
Bob The Savage Posted January 6, 2008 Author Posted January 6, 2008 OOO YEA!!! Sorry for last post, i spoke too soon! I had forgotten to change buffer size back to 40megs. The burning on the fly business appears to have done the trick!
dontasciime Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 Expect to see the error pop back as it's hardware/ I/O issue.. Have no idea why when using wnaspi32 as i/o your drive vanishes never seen it happen on lots of computers.
Bob The Savage Posted January 7, 2008 Author Posted January 7, 2008 Just successfully Burned 8 DVD's at full x8. Im back to being very happy, and my HD is a good deal cleaner. thanks to all those who helped.
Bob The Savage Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 Ok... Im back to having same problem again... #33;!! Only thing thats changed is a new HD with Vista 64 on it... help!
