blutach Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 They have almost double the space of a normal DVD-5 and so can fit more data on them. If you are backing up movies, you can fit a whole movie on them, uncompressed. Or you might like to fit 2 (shorter) movies on them. Regards

I'm really new to this but I do know when I was looking at drives everyone told me to make sure to find out if a drive will support the dual layer DVDs. It's all just academic if you have an older drive without that support. My drive is one that was given to me before I had made a decision about what to buy so I ended up with an older model that will not play or burn dual layer, it kind of sucks but I guess that free is free. DVD-5, holds around 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.37 computer GB where 1 kbyte is 1024 bytes* . DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Single Sided Single Layered. This is the most common DVD Media, often called 4.7 GB Media. DVD-10, holds around 9 400 000 000 bytes and that is 8.75 computer GB. DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Double Sided Single Layered. DVD-9, holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Single Sided Dual Layered.
