kraken Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 After the burn gets to around 11%, it fails saying that it can't detect the drive. It also won't detect in My Computer until a restart. I also tried in XP, which I dual boot, and it does the same thing. I also tried burning at 2.4x. I am using TDK DVD+R DL which I believe are better than Verbatims (around half were bad in my last batch), and have burned 7 or so perfectly before. The burner is less than a month old. mmalves Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 I 16:43:20 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started! Please upgrade to the latest ImgBurn v2.4.0.0 I 16:43:40 Destination Device: [0:1:0] PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-115D 1.06 (F:) There's a firmware update available (1.18) but I wouldn't advise applying it until that disconnection issue is solved. What motherboard does your PC have? Are you using the latest IDE/ATA drivers available for it? Is the burner connected as master at the end of a good 80-wire cable?
kraken Posted February 21, 2008 Author Posted February 21, 2008 The motherboard is an Asus M2N. I visited Asus's website and there weren't any IDE drivers for it. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing an IDE driver for any computer, unless a raid card was being used, which in this situation, the DVD drive isn't connected to. The burner is connected as slave in the middle of the IDE cable. The HDD set to master is the hard drive with XP on it which otherwise runs fine. The ISO i'm trying to burn is also on this drive. I don't know if the cable is fine, but its all I have on hand, and the same one that has been working thus far. I upgraded to IMGburn 2.4.0.0 as you suggested, but I doubt it's the issue and don't really want to try another DL burn until I have a better idea what is wrong as these disks are rather expensive and I only have a few left. My roomate suggested that it could be a power issue as I do have 8HDDs (3 external, 3 on an IDE card, 1 IDE and 1 SATA), a Geforce 8800GTS and a 500watt power supply. It could also be a heat issue as I just bought a space heater for the room yesterday, though motherboard and CPU temperatures are fine.
mmalves Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 If you want to rule out a power supply issue, disconnect all other internal HDs and try again. You may also try using the other IDE cables, as the HDs will be disconnected. Or maybe you could try the burner on another computer (this would be the best option). If you're going to try again, use 2.4x burning speed. By the way, those discs are pretty poor quality and shouldn't be expensive; I know that's not the real problem here but I thought you should know anyway
JasonFriday13 Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 Also, try wiggling the power connector on the drive. One evening, I turned my computer on, and got 'Boot failure, insert system disc and press enter'. Checked the bios, no hdd present, so I checked the power connector, and that was it.
kraken Posted February 22, 2008 Author Posted February 22, 2008 I don't think its the power connector itself since I could eject the disk after failure. Actually that in itself is kinda odd because you usually can't after a failed burn until you restart. I disconnected two hard drives and successfully burned 3 DVDs (2x+R, 1x-R). I am using the original IDE cable because none of the others would reach. I also can't try connecting it to the raid card because the cables won't reach there either unless I take the drive out and set it next to the comp. I really need the DL though and although 2-3$ a disk doesn't seem like a lot, 3 or 4 bad burns makes you think, "Gee, I could have had a great meal for that instead of some useless pieces of aluminum."
mmalves Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Unless your try burning another DL disc, we can't rule out the drive itself being defective. Apply the firmware update before trying though.
