Hi I bought a new drive last week. It reads cd's and dvd's fine and it burns cd's fine but it's not burningd dvd's correctly.

when I try to burn a dvd from an Iso file all looks fine till it gets to the verify stage then it fails same place every time I tried 2 different brands of disks and get the same error every time burned about 10 coasters sofar.

I've updated to the newest firmware and added a new ribbon cable my old one was bad.

I checked to see that drives were running in dma mode.

I removed all filters except redbook and imapi.

not sure if it's an Atapi.sys driver problem or bad media or the drive needs cleaning or the drive is just broke.

It appears to be writing on my dvd disk just can't seem to read it after and when i reinsert it it just say it's blank.

my drive is Mad dog multimedia megastor 18x Triple format Internal DVD-RW Model # MD-18xTFI

heres the log and a pic of the error message.

Do you have a log of you burning the 'other' discs too?

The drive appears to have made a dodgy burn there as the booktype hasn't been changed either - that indicates the drive is having problems.

I had been wondering about the booktype the drive didn't seem to be compatible with any of the drives listed in imgburn program so I just hit ok. there is a program on there site called winbtypev2 but it's only listed to work with the 16x drives.

In the book that came with my drive is says this.

mad dog multimedia delivers the dvd-rw drive with the drives firmware set to dvd-rom booktype to provide you with the greatest range of compatability.

I will look at that new firmware version that cynthia posted about the link shows samsung So my drive is probabbly really a samsung drive? TSSCorp apears to put out Samsung and NEC drives.

? Does the booktype have to change to record onto a dvd+R disk ? If so are there any other booktype programs out for samsung drives.

Heres a note I noticed from imgburn right after it cycles the disk out and is waiting for it to be ready it says

the medium may have changed then it fails on the verify.

heres the log from another disk didn't include another error picture cause its the exact same error message every time

TSSTcorp = Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corporation

Does the booktype have to change to record onto a dvd+R disk ?

No. In the old days some stand alone players had serious problems playing burned discs and if it saw the disc as a DVD-ROM it could play it.

I don't use bit setting on my + SL discs.

For +DL media it seems vital to use bit setting.

haven't updated the firmware yet but I found something interesting.

I said that all my dvd burns failed on verify and from what I had read I believed if they failed that test they were no good.

I took some of my burnt disks and loaded them on my stand alone player and they worked picture and sound seemed fine.

I'm just puzzled as to why my drive can't read them they just appear as blank cd in my drive. but i can read store bought movies. when I insert a blank dvd into my drive it changes and just shows up as a cd drive I read that was common on win xp

but I wonder if the drive isn't being correctly identified by windows.

can anyone confirm that windows media player 11 is evil or service pack 2

Windoze media player 11 looks like Vista, and I hate Vista (XP all the way!). The majority of people with XP machines have SP2, I also have an SP1 install disc lying around somewhere, apart from a few cosmetic changes, SP2 feels just like SP1.

well I updated the firmware and went back and adjusted settings for booktype under Samsung under adv tab and set booktype to dvd rom.

then ran a new burn this time it passed the verify test with no problem. and my disk was readable from my drive.

Thanks for the help cause I wasn't aware my drive was a samsung till I came here and the mention of the booktype not changing.

I have also found out the hard way recently that TSST Corporation, or the drive manufacturer is not necessarily the best and only place to get your update, as the TSST drive in my machine alluded to in another post was harmed by their 'Software Flash Download for Windows'. I was better served by an update provided by HP which solved all the problems TSST's created, since HP were the ones that tested the burner in this machine with this mobo and therefore are more aware of the gotchas that may come up between the two.

If you bought a drive and put it in separately like the LG I also have in this machine, then different story, but just something to think about when sending people for updates.
