Hi all. I looked around and found nothing on this topic.

Preamble that may help with trouble shooting:

I have been having a weird problem and I am ready to blame the media I am using. I picked up some Memorex DVD+DL media to try out this whole jump to DL disc's. (With a new TV and high def cables the old stuff really stands out quality wise).

Based on my research, and word of mouth, the media is junk, that's why it is so cheap. I even bought a cheap Lite-On drive to burn this stuff with since my old sony DRU-700a Could never burn anything working with this media (turns out to be ritek). The way I see it however is that if I can't do it cheaply than it's not really worth my time and money since the ultimate goal is to simply not scratch the originals.

Description of problem:

I put in the ritek/memorex DL disc and Nero tells me it is already written to. I berate myself and toss the disc thinking it's because I stopped the burn before it started to make sure the verify option is on. This happens 2 more times, for 3 times in a row, but I did not do anything this time.

I grab imgburn and than try out the media and it burns to it just fine (note I do not understand anything at this point and am just happy that imgburn is better than nero for my needs)

Now my problem is after burning 3 disc's in a row, the 4th tells me it cannot be written to since it is already burnt to, but has 4+GB free, so I end up junking it. However after the next 6 disc's told me the same thing and refused to burn I started looking around wondering what the heck is going on. Someone mentioned changing the book type to dvd-rom so I mess around try it out, and I get told that the media still has only 4GB+ free, but can be burnt to now (and this is on the junked disc I literally pulled from the top of the trash can) It burned fine and verified fine, and played fine.

The next 6 still said already written to and refused to burn while showing 4+GB free. I decide to come here, but first I need some sleep and to do some early morning work.

Final Weirdness:

I stick in one of the already written to disc's so I can copy-paste the information for trouble shooting by the experts on this forum and ta da...... The disc is blank and has 8+GB free....... I think maybe I miscounted and did not test one of the disc's, second is like this and third out of the 6 that just a few hours earlier told me it was already written to and that the disc was un-burnable

Burnt one disc successfully and put in another one that I know was empty and I got this read back.

You're gunna have all the trouble in the world unless you go get the Verbs. You are learning that Memorex is false economy. Check also for firmware updates for your drives.

Yeah it's probably the media. Oh and my firmware is the most up to date possible.

I broke earlier today and picked up the Verbatims but also another pack of Memorex for testing

So when I got home I tried a few burns and 2 in a row went off without a hitch using Memorex, but than I got the incomplete error shown earlier. I swapped the disc for one at the end of the spindle, and same thing. Placed in a Verbatim and it said it was empty. Tossed in the original Memorex andit gave the the incomplete error again. I than proceeded to change the book type to normal for the heck of it, and reloaded the disc this time getting the empty status.

I honestly don't think the book type matters and it was just a coincidence, because I have unsuccessfully changed it in the past to every type possible and reloaded discs to no avail. I guess the Memorex and this cheapo lite-on don't like to work together when it get's too hot from multiple burns in a row.

Maybe the solution is to actively cool the burner with a fan? :P

Thanks for the response.

Do you happen to have any packet-writing software like InCD or DirectCD enabled and set to automatically format inserted blank media in the background? A friend of mine that encountered this issue had DirectCD doing this. After I disabled it on his computer, it never happened again.

I don't think so, and I just ran a search for both of those on my drive so I don't have those two. One of the things I did when this first happened was to disable anything running in the BG, starting with AnyDVD and Daemon, and it still came up written too.

Another thing to remember is I pinpointed that after I let the drive sit/cool down the disc was now registering as blank.
