Cynthia Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 The installed firmware is over 3 years old. If it is a Dell computer - try to see if there is any later firmware to find: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...;l=en&s=gen I 13:31:13 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-004-00) (Speeds: 2x, 4x) Those discs are rated for higher speeds - but the burner can only deal with them at the two lowest speeds. Not even the 8x speed (that is the max for the burner) can be supported - I think it's high time to get a new burner, especially since you report severe play back problems with your current burnings.
azdood Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 I guess it's time to upgrade. I still can't get used to something that is three years old is an antique. Thanks for your help with this. It's been driving me nuts. David
Cynthia Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Well, I would say it's older than three years. That model was released in late 2003 and DVD burners have come a long way since then. With a new burner you will also be allowed to use -R/-RW and double layer discs and burn faster than 8x on your current media.
LOCOENG Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I guess it's time to upgrade. I still can't get used to something that is three years old is an antique. Thanks for your help with this. It's been driving me nuts. David The good news it excellent burners can be had in the $30-$40 range nowadays...Pioneer 115D for instance from the Egg.
azdood Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 You have to clue me in - what's the Egg? I'm not real computer savvy and I was wondering if I could install just any burner or do I have to get my computer's specs and go from there? And how would I do that without calling Dell, something I swore I'd never ever do again? I really appreciate your help with this. David
Cynthia Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 http://www.newegg.com/ if you live in the USA. I think the guarantee time is over for that computer? If so - get whatever you like. It looks as an older computer so go for a PATA connected one (the same connections in the back of the burner as you have today). There are also SATA burners - but I doubt you have such connections in the computer. The model of the new burner? In most cases people tend to suggested what they have them self.
LOCOENG Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 115D....sorry, I assume that most people know about newegg.com Beige - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827129017 Black - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827129018
azdood Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 I checked out that Pioneer unit and I'm going to get it. It got great reviews and the price is certainly right. I called them and it has an IDE connection which the salesman said is the same as a PATA; just another name for it. Thanks so much for your help with this. I really appreciate it. David
