hammerdown Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I need to update the firmware on my WD hard disk. There is a utility to do this available from WD Support, but has to be put on/run from a "formatted floppy". My laptop does not have floppy so I'm trying to make a bootable cd with the WD utility on in. Here is the WD support article: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/ph...;p_sp=undefined Here are the files that are supposed to be saved to a formatted floppy: Autoexec.bat command.com dlglice.txt ibmbio.com ibmdos.com wdupd020.exe wdupd020.txt Looks like I need to make a bootable (dos) cd with wdupd020.exe on it? How can I do this?
mmalves Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I've made a bootable image with your update utility (tested on a virtual machine and it even works ) and attached to this post: you can download it and burn to disc (have Verify enabled to make sure it was properly burnt!) I have to say one thing though: usually in laptops the CD/DVD drive is connected in the same cable as the HD, so, in theory, this could interfere with the HD firmware update bootable.zip
hammerdown Posted May 6, 2008 Author Posted May 6, 2008 Thanks that worked. But if you have time please explain how you did it
mmalves Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 I took a bootable floppy image from here (Win98SE under Non-Windows Based Image Files W/ImageApp) and used Micro$oft's Virtual PC 2007 (VMWare also would work) to mount this floppy image to a virtual machine, which you can then edit just like as if it was a real floppy disk. Then I used ImgBurn to create a bootable CD/DVD image using the modified floppy image as the bootable source
pmshah Posted May 19, 2008 Posted May 19, 2008 There is a much simpler method for making &/or editing existing boot images. Search for a freeware utility called file called vfd.exe or vfdwin.exe This is an extremely light weight virtual floppy device driver. I tried to find You certainly don't need a virtual machine & the additional memory to run it. Download it here... http://down2.zol.com.cn/xitongruanjian/vfloppy.rar

helloworld1712 Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 Hi I am trying to run the same file but it says controller not supported and doesnt detect the hard drive. I am using Vista 64 bit and 320gb SATA HDD. Any suggestions ? I have been trying to solve this problem for the last three days
helloworld1712 Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Talk to Western Digital about it? Yes i have spoken to WD about and they are not being very helpful. Infact i dont think they have enough knowledge of it.
helloworld1712 Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 That bootable.zip works fine in my desktop computer which has win XP. But on my laptop , HDD is RAID connected. COuld that be the problem?
