dbminter Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Okay, the latest Geico ad has their Gecko, with yet ANOTHER new voice, one Australian now, talking about the joys of free pie and chips. What the hell are chips in this case? Last I checked, chips were: 1.) in America, potato chips, aka crisps 2.) what we in America call French Fries But, who would give any potato products free with pie? UNLESS... there's a strange euphemism for pie I'm not aware of?
lfcrule1972 Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Yeah chips are what you call "fries" db - usually Chips are a little fatter than fries though.... Pie & Chips is quite common in a lot of places I think....
dbminter Posted January 23, 2006 Author Posted January 23, 2006 Now, I just want to be sure here. Pie. Here in the States, pie is a dessert. Made with chocolate, fruit, etc. contained on a crust, often times topped with icing, pudding, or cream. Or creme. Is this the same kind of pie we are discussing?
Grain Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Probably more along the lines of meat pies, to quote Cartman, "Bad Kitty! That's my chicken pot pie..." "Respect my a-thor-i-ta!"
polopony Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 yep, Shepards Pie comes to mind ,Scotch Eggs are pretty good also
lfcrule1972 Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 Yeah we have savoury pies like Steak & Kidney Pie, Chicken & Mushroom Pie etc and sweet ones like Apple Pie or Apple & Blackberry Pie.... Oh there is also Pork Pie's - cold savoury pies !
digidragon Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 But just to confuse you even more, sweet pies are often called tarts And in case you don't know, a tart is a woman of ill repute, or a woman who puts it about, etc...
lfcrule1972 Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 Q. What does Mr Kipling do at night ? A. He fills tarts with cream !!!
dbminter Posted January 24, 2006 Author Posted January 24, 2006 Oh, now I get it! Pie and chips, meaning savory pies and not sweet pies. It makes sense to get chips with something like chicken pot pie.
lfcrule1972 Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Which is what exactly ?? Is hair pie like "drinking from the hairy cup" ?
blutach Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 (edited) Here, a pie is a meat pie. Made from the shittiest, lowest quality crap you can find. Basically meat filling a pastry. A bit bigger than the size of your hand. When we go to the footy, we can't get enuff of them. No trendy pizzas for us. Give us a pie!!! Then just add chips (fat french fries but not as fat as "potato wedges"). Drown them both in tomato sauce (you'll know it as Ketchup) and eat yourself to death. Oh yeah - add a few beers while yer at it. http://www.upfromaustralia.com/4n20meatpies.html Regards Edited January 26, 2006 by blutach
dbminter Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 Now, if you get the right kind of pizza slice, the soft kind, aka New York style, you can put the fries on the slice, roll it up, and have a convenient pizza potato sandwich.
Grain Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I prefer my fries the Quebec way, as Poutine. Cheese curds on the fries, then smothered in gravy. Will give a healthy man a heart attack, but what a way to go.
lfcrule1972 Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I like cheesy chips..... hot chips (fries) with grated cheese melting on the top !! Yum...
