it's happened in both nero and now in imgburn. the disc is recognizable through several other sources, but once i attempt to burn onto it it is no longer registered. the message "device not ready (medium not present)" can be read in the bottom-left corner of the window.

anyone know what's going on there?

What media are you using and what is your burner?

That status code/message comes from the drive, so it's the thing that thinks there's no disc.
