Hi guys, I'm on a laptop and I tried burning some .rar files just now onto my 16x Mitsubishi DVD+Rs. The first two attempts were very successful, but not for the third. Here's my log:

I'm currently using 2.4.1.0 and haven't updated yet for 2.4.2.0. The settings were the default ones.

Is my DVD Drive dying? For your information, it's a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N and it's able to read but not write at all.

On a side note, I tried burning with Nero too but to no avail.

1. Update

2. If it can't write at all, you have either a batch of dodgy dics (unlikely) or a drive that can't write to those discs (look for a firmware update) or the drive is fcucked. You could try cleaning it, but new drives are cheap these days.

I 06:22:25 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-004-00) (Speeds: 4x, 8x)

I 06:22:25 Destination Media Sectors: 2,272,272

That disc already was the result of a bad burn and got damaged in the process, so please throw it out (or use it as a coaster) and try a new blank disc. Also try burning at 4x to see if it works better. As blutach said, check with your laptop manufacturer for a firmware update for your burner. You may also want to try Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden 8x-rated blanks, as you might have more luck using them on a laptop burner.

If after doing all this it still doesn't work, get a normal-size burner in an external enclosure, as laptop burners are too picky about the media they like and don't have too long of a lifespan

Hi, it's me again. This time, I tried to burn an ISO instead of a batch of .rar files onto a CD-R. And guess what? It worked!

I'm going to dig up a DVD-R and see if it's working or not. Wish me luck.

Well, the Titanium(?) DVD-R worked. It seems that for some reason, my drive rejects the Mitsubishi DVD+Rs. Damn.

I'm not sure what's the problem, because it worked in the past. What's with the sudden hiccup?

Anyway, here's the log for the DVD-R and it's an PS2 ISO.

That's why we recommend Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden blanks: they have consistent high quality and work on most burners. Other brands may change the dye of the disc whenever they want, and this affects burn quality :)

I guess I'll give Verbatim a go because I can't seem to find any Taiyo Yuden around my area.

Oh, and another question. Is it actually suitable to burn an ISO or whatever image file on a DVD+R? Because I tried burning a PS2 image on a DVD+R before, and it isn't really responsive to my PS2. I wonder if that's the same for other images.

Should I go for DVD+R or DVD-R?

My PS2s (two 39001 and one 50001) work fine with both DVD-R and DVD+R, but I've heard a lot of stories where PS2s worked better with one format than with the other. I guess you'll have to try both and find out which one your PS2 likes better :)
