ImgBurn only erases disc index in full mode

Hi Light.Uk,

great to see you back with a new prog  Maybe you know whats going on with the following problem.I have a Plextor DVDR PX-716A fw: 1.11 and try to erase a DVD-RW Verbatim in full disc mode.Since the day when i erased the disc with Nero in quick mode all programs i tried so far (CDRWin,Nero and now also ImgBurn) only erase the disc index (quick erase) and not the complete disc even though erasing full disc is selected. Can that be fixed?

Hiya

Why is this in 'bugs' if all programs do it?!

ohh also informed the other authors about this issue and called it a "bug" cause complete disc not gets erased

How long does it take to erase it?

only 1-2mins

What makes you think it's only taking the 'index' away?

1) because usualy it takes about 15-19mins to erase a disc in full mode

2) you can see it by flippin' the disc that the laser did not finished the disc even though the application says "erasing successfully completed"

I blame your drive then, sorry.

The full erase command IS being issued (as I'm sure it is in all the others), your drive just isn't dealing with it properly.

I dug out my 716 - it was only on the v1.09 firmware though and I didn't realise until I'd done my tests...

Verbatim 6x DVD-RW

I 18:47:59 ImgBurn Version 2.4.2.1 Beta started!

I 18:47:59 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 3)

I 18:47:59 Total Physical Memory: 2,094,828 KB - Available: 1,465,848 KB

I 18:47:59 Initialising SPTI...

I 18:47:59 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...

I 18:47:59 Found 1 DVD

I would agree with the boss, even without his tests. If all programs that you use are failing to erase the disc under full erase it would definitely point to the drive wouldn't it ?

I assume you have tried other RW's ?? I have never found RW's to be that reliable and certainly not very long lived, maybe this one is just knackered ? Before you change the drive (if you even want to) you might just try a new RW.

I have had this happen on lots of RW when I have messed on with them used em in Nero :(

Try a brand new RW cheapo then try with a dearer one but only with ImgBurn first.

If it still does it after this then either drive is broken or maybe your controller port/ide/sata has had it or a rogue driver is responsible. So try drive in another computer if you can. Then buy a new drive but stay away from Plextor.

Just one other thing... some drives won't do a proper erase unless the disc actually has something on it.

i.e. they think they're clever enough to not need a full erase if it's already empty and so will just do another quick one.

So don't try full erasing a disc that's already empty.

Surely i am not at all as familiar and experienced as LightUk but IHMO these problems are software related.I'll test my drive and will come up with the results later on today.Yesterday night i started collecting and testing some things with some new Verbatim RW discs and encounter these "quick erase" problems mostly when:

- Nero runs into energetic calibration errors

- out of no where. Then again after erasing another disc the same disc which fails before now works again.

- erasing a RW in quick mode

- burning discs using CDRWin

Sometimes these discs work flawlessly after full erasing in CDRWin,burning 4gb of data in Nero and erasing again in Nero in full disc mode.So i assume it has something to do with the issue LightUK mentioned:

"they're clever enough to not need a full erase if it's already empty and so will just do another quick" even though its not empty. And all discs i deleted have 4gb storage data on it and still dont get erased in full mode.Since the quick erase is successful in all tested applications i doubt my drive has something to do with it.

Shouldnt a disc in full mode gets erased no matter what mark or information on the disc index is set?!

We don't mean to sound patronising :) but from a distance it's sometimes hard to diagnose faults like this.

Our first guess is the burner as you stated that all programs were having trouble with a full erase, you also mentioned that a quick erase works but a full erase doesn't. If the same command fails from all your burning programs I can see why the drive was suggested as being at fault. My guess was the RW itself if you believe the burner to be ok, this is because they are not always very reliable when compared to the Verbatim DVD

Don't think the software plays a big part in erasing a DVD-RW, it REALLY doesn't!

It's one command and the drive goes off and does its thing.

Clearly Nero, CDRWIN and ImgBurn aren't all getting that 1 basic command wrong (and remember that it works fine for everyone except you - and I proved that twice yesterday with the same drive you have) so really it can only come down to your setup/drive.

Alright,i understand your point. But the drive is fine and right now i am successfully erasing a written RW with CDRWin which fails in Nero and ImgBurn in full-erasing mode.So i honestly dunno whats going on >_< ...

Edit:

Its software related! The applications (also tested a tool called Active DVD Eraser) only erase a disc in full mode, when its fully written with data. When its quick erased it then can be reburned fully but not erased in full mode!So actually there must be some information stored after quick erase which tells the applications that theres no need to erase the complete disc.

Honestly no one knows ImgBurn like the boss - it's his :baby: therefore if he tells you something, you can take it as gospel........

Maybe there is something intermittent with the drive ?
