this has happend 4 times so far. i set imgburn to write at 4x and it will be fine till around 45% then for no reason it will speed up to max speed and ruin the disc. is there any reason why this would be happening??

Please post the log from a burn where this happens (you can find the logs at Help menu -> ImgBurn Logs).

The supported write speeds with this writer for the discs you're using is these:

I 19:27:08 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: MCC 03RG20) (Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 18x)

So try to use some of these. 8x or 12x should give the best results.

I've never seen a writer go crazy so in speed before.

As you are using -R media you could try to test once with the option 'Test Mode' enabled, to see if it runs crazy then.

Tried to put in another SATA connector (if there are any other free)?

The media - is it Verbatim branded?

Try with another brand of media to rule out the media as being the reason for the odd speeds after the writing error.
