What have you installed / changed that could have caused it?

I/O normally gets stuck due to bad controller / filter drivers.

What make of controller is the drive actually connected to? If you don't know that, perhaps you know what make/model motherboard you have or what chipset it uses?

How many optical drives (including virtual ones) do you have in your machine? I see that one thinks it's a slave drive so I'm guessing it's an IDE one?

I have 4 USB external Hard Drives as I use this as a media server. I also have internal DVD burner as well as my internal LG BD burner. Intel P965/G965 I beleive is my chipset. A SATA raid controller is what my LG blu Ray burner is plugged into and not sure about the other DVD burner. I can't hink of any thing I have added but maybe my last external HDD. I have a Dell XPS 410.

Is the drive on a 3rd party (plugin - i.e. pci / pcie) sata raid controller or just the intel ich8 controller?

What 'mode' is the controller running in? (this is normally set in the bios)

You want to make sure it's in standard / ata mode and not ahci or raid.

I don't have a PCI SATA card it is working right off the motherboard SATA plugin. I am not sure how to change the controller from RAD to standard as when I access the BIOS it looks like the only choices are on or off on the SATA drive Iam looking at.

What do you see under the ide/atapi controller branch in device manager? How about the scsi / raid controller one?

See if you can get us a screenshot with both of those branches expanded and visible.

The bios option would be for the controller itself rather than a drive. Being a Dell, they might have hidden all that stuff from you.

Try installing the latest chipset and matrix drivers from the intel site.
