opypr Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Hello, I am new to the burning DVDs, but I managed to burn 3 while damaging 15. Not a good ratio I have a Dell desktop, XP SP3, and using Verbatim DVD-R. I managed to burn one DVD and finished ok, so I wanted to burn a different DVD, and It just wont work! I even re-booted the PC (just in case), but no luck. Here are the different logs: first 2 good ones... I 10:44:07 ImgBurn Version 2.4.2.0 started! I 10:44:07 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 3) I 10:44:07 Total Physical Memory: 1,046,620 KB - Available: 644,380 KB I 10:44:07 Initialising SPTI... I 10:44:07 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices... I 10:44:07 Found 1 DVD
Cynthia Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Hi and welcome to the forum, opypr! Couldn't find any later firmware for that Dell (???) writer. Have you tried to use a cleaning disc?
volvofl10 Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I'd say its either ; A) your drive just dont like those discs if youve had sucsessfull burns before These are a differant brand than you had C) youve got a bad (faulty/fake) stack of discs easiest way is to get some other brand of discs ( borrow a couple off a mate) and try those . What brand of discs are those that keep failing ?
opypr Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 Hi, Thank you Cynthia for making everyone feel welcome... Cynthia: I bought some canned air, managed to burn once, and again failed the second... :-( Also, the firmware I got is, I believe the latest, unless someone tells me otherwise... It's a ND-3530a, NEC. volvofl10: Like I mention in the opening message, I just started burning on this NEC DVD/CD writer. Never burned dvds before... Although it has always been there I never used it before... The brand of DVDs are Verbatim -R 16x AZO... Some work and some won't. So I am wondering if I can do or change something to make it burn successfully each time. Should I open it up and Q-tip it? Thanks
Cynthia Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 According to this page there is no later firmware for the Dell model of the writer. http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/NEC-ND-3530A/ Yes, you could try to open it up. A new writer today costs not very much, but it could be worth a try to get the old one to work. If it then after the cleaning doesn't work with those Verbatims - it's time to get a new one.

Thanks for the link... I found it 3 days back and tested the 3.01 original, and then changed it for the 104c, and the behavior is the same... Yesterday I found this page: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Sp...9&PageId=11 there I saw that MCC03RG20 are acceptable, (which I think is the same as the Verbatim dvd-r 16x AZO that I got), yet in this other page on the same site : http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Sp...9&PageId=20 says that Verbatim 16X DVD-R @ 16X are bad... Don't know if they are AZO or what, but since I am having so much trouble... I will have to get another brand a try.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Try some of the Verbatim DVD+R discs instead. Personally if I want DVD-R I use Taiyo Yuden. If I want DVD+R then I'll use the Verbs.

Hi LIGHTNING UK!, I decided to go with the Verbatim DVD-R first, since the plan was to be able to play them on a standalone player (Panasonic S24 which only likes -R ). According to my previous post, in the media link page, the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R that my NEC likes is a 2X. Is that correct? And if so, why can't I find the Verbatims DVD-R in that list? How do I know which brand are the following: MCC00RG200 MCC01RG20 MCC02RG20 MCC03RG20 MCC04RG20 MCC05RG20 MCC06RG20 The package of Verbatim 16X DVD-R AZO that I bought does not have the MCC03RG20 ID on the label. I just know that they are MCC03RG20 because of the log. So how do I pick my next purchase? Thanks
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Go for some Taiyo Yuden TYG02 8x DVD-R then. I use those almost exclusively. You have to buy online if you want to buy going by the disc id. Nobody prints it on the actual spindle... well, almost nobody - real Taiyo Yuden's have it on the top label.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 No but TYG02 have worked with every drive I've ever had... and I've had NEC models both before and after that one.

I started looking for Taiyo Yuden, and found Rima.com There I saw TYG02: DVD-R47ZZ100SB 8X Silver Lacquer (Shiny Silver) DVD-R47WPT100SK8 8X White Thermal Printable DVD-R47SPY100SB8 8 Silver Inkjet Printable DVD-R47WPP100SK8 8 White Inkjet Printable Which one should I get? I don't care about surface much since I use a sharpie. Thanks for your opinion and help.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 I only ever get the shiny silver ones myself... I have no interest in printing on them either! Over here in the UK we pay about
