gjscott75 Posted February 4, 2009 Share Posted February 4, 2009 Whenever I have my Samsung SH-D162D (installed in a USB enclosure) connected to my PC and try to start ImgBurn, it hangs. If I disconnect the USB cable, it kicks back into life. This is the 2nd SH-D162D drive I've had, I RMA'd the previous one as I thought it was faulty, but this new one is doing the exact same thing?!?! It could be that your usb adapter is causing the command to hang like that. D'oh! I was hoping to avoid it as it means performing open heart surgery on my PC. Not a real problem, just means crawling through a rats nest of cables. Just for reference, before I RMA'd the original drive I tried a spare Pioneer writer (can't remember which model, it was pretty old though) I had lying around in that same USB enclosure to try to see if it would narrow down which component wasn't behaving... it worked okay, it didn't cause ImgBurn to hang when scanning for drives so I presumed it was the Samsung drive rather than the enclosure at fault. Now I'm not sure what it is, unless I've got another faulty Samsung drive or the enclosure has some incompatibility with that particular model of Samsung drive, or maybe ImgBurn just doesn't like Samsung (which I can understand as I'm starting to dislike them too now!) So, I borrowed a USB external enclosure from a friend to try to replicate the problem (the borrowed unit was an IcyBox, whereas my own is a Stardom unit). If this were a problem with my Stardom enclosure, it should work fine in the IcyBox. But, no. The same problem happened with the Samsung when it was in the IcyBox?!? Could it be that the drive is faulty, the second one in a row I've had? So, removed the Samsung from the IcyBox and installed it inside my PC, connected using an IDE cable this time rather than via USB. Surprisingly, it *did* work this time?!? I'm completely confused now. I can only imagine that the Samsung just doesn't like being put in a USB enclosure in general, or it specifically doesn't like the two enclosures I've tried.
