Buffer jumping around like crazy

This is a problem that began recently and I am not sure why because I didn't make any changes to my hardware or software that I am personally aware of.

You guys know how the ImgBurn screen when you are writing an ISO has 3 bars. The top one is "% complete", the middle one is "buffer" and then the last bar is I think "Memory buffer" (Sorry, can't really remember). Basically my problem is whenever I burn a DVD image, the middle buffer bar would suddenly drop from 100% to for example 70 then 50, 20, 0 and then climb back up from 0 to 100% again. The bottom buffer bar would then go erratic, jumping from 100 to 50 to 75 to 20 to 100 in irregular patterns. The disc writing process would stop until both buffers go back to 100%, and then after 30 seconds or so of stable full buffers, they would jump around again.

So my questions are:

1) Why is this happening? Problem with my DVD drive?

2) Does losing buffer like this affect the quality of the discs I write? (the finished products still work)

3) How can I fix this?

THank you so much in advance for any help you guys can offer me.

1) It happens because the source image/files couldn't be read at a fast enough speed to sustain the burn speed you're using.

2) Each time the burn stops to refill the buffers the drive has to relink the burn to continue the burn from where it stopped. Theoretically this shouldn't affect quality, but some pickier devices (DVD players/consoles/etc) may stutter/freeze at these relink points.

3) Defragment your hard drive and check if it hasn't gone into PIO mode (have a look at the DMA post on the FAQ).
