Newbie's possibly dumb question about pathnames

I find it interesting that the default for "preserve full pathnames" is "disabled."

Why would one not want to have the full pathname?

I've had problems in the past with Excel files where the pathname was changed, causing links between worksheets not to work.

Because you can be burning things from anywhere on your hdd and might just want that folder and not all the ones before it.
