I have a problem when writing CD. I try to set the writing speed to 16x and 24x but when writing the speed is not stop at what it should be, its seem it's always writing at max speed(40x) instead of what I choose, I'm sure that my writer and CD support those writing speed.

Please burn another disc, but this time press the F8 key before you hit the write button. When it's finished, press F8 again.

Save the log and upload it again.

Thanks! :)

Here we see ImgBurn setting the speed to '0B 06' (0x0B06 = 2822 KB/s = 16x)...

and here we query the drive to see what the selected write speed is....

0x0B07 = 2823 KB/s = 16x

Ok so it's one byte per second faster than I'd asked for but that's just a tiny calculation difference and nothing to worry about. The drive should still be burning at 16x.

So, nothing wrong with my burning.

By the way, I don't have any idea on how to read the log(know about hex though) could you please explain why when writing the Write Rate that show when writing is keep increasing and not stop at the rate that I chose?

I 05:22:56 Write Mode: CD

I 05:22:56 Write Type: SAO

I 05:22:56 Write Speed: 16x

I 05:22:56 Lock Volume: Yes

I 05:24:56 Export Successfully Completed!

I 05:24:56 Operation Successfully Completed! - Duration: 00:02:00

I 05:24:56 Average Write Rate: 4,532 KB/s (30.2x) - Maximum Write Rate: 5,780 KB/s (38.5x)

Thanks very much for the help.

LUK asked for that debug log so that he could confirm that the right command for 16x speed is being sent and the burner confirms setting that write speed. The problem is that the burner isn't obeying the write speed set, and this is out of ImgBurn's hands I'm afraid :(

It would appear that way, yes.

Do you have any optical drive related programs installed / running that could be screwing with things?

I had a look around lastnight and it would appear your drive is just a rebranded liteon anyway - I tried 16x with my iHAS422 but it burnt at 16x just fine. I may revert it to the original firmware and try again though, perhaps it's something they fixed in the newer one. There don't appear to be any firmware updates available for your drive.

I try to burn the discs again(2 discs) but with Nero Express 8 this time(just installed it for testing) and it seem the writer can burn the disc at the desired speed, not sure if the display of speed when writing is accurate but it seem is since I try it with the different rate, 24x and 8x and the latter take longer to finished.

I wonder if there's perhaps a bug in the firmware's code with controlling the speed via the 'SET CD SPEED' command rather than the 'SET STREAMING' one (which gets used when burning DVDs etc).

I can email you a version which sends both for CD's if you like and you can give that a try? You can turn on test mode so as to not waste any discs.

Yes, please do.

I also suspect that it's cause by the firmware as well, here are what I've tried.

Writer: ASUS DRW-22B1S

Media: Ritek CD-R

CloneCD

At 8x,16x,24x and MAX the results is nothing, its look like it's burning but actually it's burnt nothing and the disc stay blank.

ImgBurn

At 16x and 24x the results is it's always writing at MAX speed.

At 8x the results is the same as CloneCD, the disc stay blank.

Burnaware

At 8x the result is unreadable disc.

Nero Express 8

At 24x the results is good with no problem.

At 8x the result is good with no problem as well.

The only software that's work normally is Nero 8 that's came bundle with the drive.

Please verify your burns. I wasn't aware that 8x produced an unreadable disc... and I'm not sure why it should if all the speeds are just being ignored and the disc is burning at max speed.

Burn one at 8x (Test Mode OFF, Verify ON) and then copy + paste the log from that. Please also include the disc info stuff both before and after the burn so I can compare the two.

As soon as I've finished rebuilding my PC I'll get that other build over to you - I assume your forum email address is ok? If not, please PM me a better one.

Actually, it's not unreadable, it's just doesn't write anything to the disc at all thus the disc stay blank and still usable.

The unreadable one is from using Burnaware.

Yes, please use my forum email.

How odd!

Is 8x the only one that makes blank discs or do all speeds do that?

Do they actually look like they've been burnt if you look at the writing surface?

Posted

Yes, seem 8x is the only speed that's make the discs blank, the other that I've tried(16x and 24x) are burnt successfully but always at MAX speed instead.

The writing process take sometime and make it look like it's actually burning but the results is the disc is blank and still new, nothing on the surface, no sign that it has been burnt.
