I now got a response by Verbatim after they examined the discs. All their tests showed ok, good or very good results for my burnt discs (they sent me copies of the results). Same goes for other discs of the same cakebox, which I hadnt used and Verbatim burnt and tested too. Though they concluded there was nothing wrong with my dics, they sent a generous replacement. They believe that my system for some reason had given me wrong (unjustifiedly bad) testing results. I'm still looking for an explanation, because in some of my problem cases, the burning process even had been interrupted with error message (which seems to say the problem can not lie in testing alone).

Update: I showed all these results to Verbatim customer service. They asked me to send the discs in for analysis and announced a refund in case the media turn out to be faulty.

I now got myself a few Sony DVD+Rs and burnt one in each of my drives. The results are better and seem to approve that the problems were due to the Verbies, am I right?

I have googled around a bit and found quite a number of reports by people having burning issues with Windows 7, while they had no trouble with XP. I installed XP to test it, burnt two large projects, one with each of my drives. While the Pioneer burn looks almost normal (with a small prong shortly after 3 GB again) the LiteOn showed similar problems as under Windows 7.

If it's really due to the discs I will try to get a refund for them.- I'm using rather old mainboard with NForce3 chipset, 2 Ghz cpu and 2 GB RAM here. I was worrying a bit about installing and in particular burning under Windows 7, because nforce3 chipset is not officially supported by it. The device manager showed no problems here though, and in several forums I read it will work, so I finally did it... Is it possible the problems here are related to chipset/OS compatibility issues?

I now burnt a third project, first with the LiteOn then with Pioneer drive. The LiteOn stops the burning process with error message "Invalid Address For Write". For the Pioneer burn no error messages occured, but the Graph log has a "prong" at 3 GB. Afaik the Verbatims MCC004 are usually considered reliable.

Thanks for the hints. I'd like to show the graph data files here. "second project first attempt" is from the burn with failed verification "second project second attempt" is the second attempt for the same project (verification succeeded, but slowed down at 60%) They both seem to show problems in the same area. "first project" shows in comparison another project,done shortly before these two, with the same drive and a disc from the same cakebox, which seems to be fine. Does this point more to the drive or to the media as problem source? thanks, Stefan

Very strange still. Never had problems with this combination of drive and media besides the slightly lower speed, which is probably done by the firmware. I will experiment a bit with your suggestions. Can I assume the second burn (with verification succeeded)is ok? - I forgot to add I've changed from Windows XP to 7 Ultimate short time ago. Can this be related? Besides these two burns, I've done only one other DVD burn since the change, but this one was ok.

Thanks for the hint. I'll keep this option in mind, but I was starting to wpnder if it could be due to a filesystem error of the source, because it seemed to be related to the 60% mark.

I then burnt the same project to another disc of same type. Watching the burning process, I noticed the burning speed went down at approximately 60% too, and the same happened again during verification, but this time verification succeeded. What could have caused the problems? I've never had a coaster so far with the Pioneer drive and the Verbatim disks. Hi there, If I burn a video DVD and I put additonal files on it besides the VIDEO_TS folder (e.g. a .jpeg with the DVD cover or a text file with info about the disc's content), could this cause problems? Would a standalone player still recognize it as Video DVD? thanks Stefan

Thanks for the hint. I now burnt the same content with nero ( 8 .mp4 videoclips)- and suddenly experienced the same thing (readable in DVD drives, not in standalone) Then I burnt the same 8 files and 2 mpeg files on the same disk with nero. Now the standalone loaded the disk, but listed only the two mpeg files(and was able to play them) So actually the problem, unlike I had assumed, seems related to the file format; the player obviously gives an "unknown disc" - error in case there are exclusively file formats it can't play. What got me confused was the fact that, in earlier burns, videofiles that were not playable for the standalone were nevertheless still listed on the TV screen, these were in most cases .wmv files. Maybe the player (a DK Digital 339) has a special issue with .mp4 format or changed its behaviour with the last firmware upgrade. So I just tried burning with ISO9660 + Joliet, but it didn't help :-( I haven't done the firmware update yet. Though it's recommendable in general, I doubt firmware the cause here, for the same problem occured with both of my drives in combination with several media.

According to the manufacturer's website mine seems to be the newest: http://www.pioneer.de/de/content/support/s...html#fdvdwriter Nero hadn't changed the files into DVD format. I used to burn video files simply as data project with nero (not creating menues etc) and the result was playable in my standalone (or even when it could't read the file format, the dvd player showed a list of the files on the TV screen). greetings, Stefan Edit: ok, I've just found the firmware you mentioned on Pioneer's international site
