Problem solved, but just a quick additional question. Does the transfer mode also affect the READ speed? I have a friend who has a slow read problem on his PC (he doen't write CDs/DVDs too often) and I was wondering if the I/O mode setting could be the problem in his case also. Thanks!! . . .

There's newer firmware (DW10) available for your burner. Thanks . . . I found that the drive was operating in PIO mode, as the referenced post suggested. Deleted the driver and rebooted, and now it is set to DMA mde. Also, thanks for the info on the new firmware. Downloaded and installed that also. My write speed has declined dramatically. I used to average about 8 - 10x, but now it is 2 - 3x. I thought the problem might be due to a recent upgrade of SPTD driver, so I removed it but no effect on write performance.
