  1. But we're talking about audio files, not video. That said, I stand corrected, my Oppo UDP-203 and my Sony X700 play the FLACs on the disc just fine, but my Panasonic DP-UB820 does not. Doesn't surprise me being a Panasonic. You can put any video you want on Blu-rays. 480p video is accepted in Blu-ray authoring, and back in the late 2000's, the first Blu-rays had the movie in HD while the extras were still SD. If you want to transfer a DVD to a Blu-ray that for some reason was only released on DVD, you just need to extract the VOB files from the DVD and then re-author them to the Blu-ray folder and file structure. Videohelp.com has lots of tools for that. I never had a Verbatim coaster, in any format, CD-R, DVD-R or BD-R. During the 90's and 2000's I used Memorex, and getting some coasters per spindle was a common thing. Then in 2008 I bought the first BD-Rs Memorex released, just 15 for $85. I put in them a lot of things that I had shot with my Canon HD camera and were precious memories for me that were irreplaceable. Just 9 months later, I grab one of those discs, put them in my Blu-ray player, and it gave me an error. So it did when I put it in the Blu-ray burner, an LG. So I grab the next disc I had burned, same thing. All the BD-Rs I had burned just months ago, all ruined without any chance of recovery. I called Memorex to demand a refund, and they offered me to send me a replacement. I told them "No thanks, I already lost precious memories on video thanks to your crappy discs, I don't want more of them, I want my $85 back." But they didn't budge, and I never bought a Memorex spindle again, and never will. That's when I switched to Verbatim, and I have bought hundreds, from 2008 until now, of all formats, and I never had a single coaster. And I bought the plain ones with the label you can write on, and printable ones as well. I'm very surprised to learn that you had so many bad ones. Have you tried different burners?
  2. Well, 4K Blu-ray players do just fine with BD-R DL discs. In fact, I burned one today filled up to 99% according to ImgBurn and my players read it and play it just fine. The thing about flash drives, SSDs, hard drives, etc, is that one screw-up and everything gets deleted. Well, with hard drives, you just take it for granted that one day it's not going to work anymore. But they are all erasable. With BD-Rs, as long as it's Verbatim and not Memorex or some other crappy brand, you know that it's going to last several years, and it can't be erased accidentally. So I know that ten years from now, that disc I burned today will still work just fine. Also, BD-Rs have a coating against accidental scratches.
  3. I know. I have a 1 TB drive connected to my router, and I play from it in most of my devices. But I like to have things on optical discs too. When compared to a CD, a BD-R DL can store hundreds of albums, even in Hi-Res, so even if 50 GB is nowhere near 1 TB, it's still a lot of music in one disc.
  4. Because I spent good money in buying albums in Hi-Res, some of which go up to 24-96 and some 24-192. Seems foolish to take away a lot of audio information just to put them on a CD that will contain a single album, when a BD-XL can contain hundreds of them. Even a BD-RL can contain over a hundred albums in FLAC.
  5. It probably does, but not from a BD-XL. That's what I gather from all the reading I've done on several forums, that there's only one player that plays data BD-XLs and it's a Panasonic that is sold only in Japan and is super expensive. You know how it is, the Japanese always have the best electronics in the world.
  6. Not MP3s, just FLACs. But I know the players support the format (maybe the Panasonic doesn't, I can't remember but it's the most finicky when it comes to formats), as I have burned data BD-Rs and BD-R DL with albums in FLAC Hi-Res and they work just fine. In the case of the BD-XL, my Oppo, Sony and Panasonic players just don't even read the disc, all of them give me an error.
  7. Thanks. Well, actually, I was hoping against hope it could be read by my 4K Blu-ray players, but not a single one, not even the Oppo UDP-203, which is a champ at reading all kinds of formats. Seems weird, since 4K Blu-rays are actually BD-XLs with 100 GB, even if they don't get to that amount of space. So in theory they should be able to read them, but I guess the manufacturers didn't care much.
  8. I'm getting ready to burn my first BD-XL ever, filled with music albums I bought online for the past two years, and I want to maximize the chances that it will be read by my 4K Blu-ray players. I can't find anywhere if BD-XLs are supposed to be 2.50 or 2.60. Does anyone here know?
  9. I did, and the project burned, so thanks for the tip. Still, I will probably buy that Pioneer soon, I trust Pioneer more than any other brand of burners.
  10. Interesting. How ridiculous that they support a drive from earlier than the GBW, I think it was one year older. I feel cheated indeed, and I will let LG know that because of this I will not buy another LG product again. Do you have a good impression of the Pioneer BDR-206DBKS? Pioneer always worked great for me, I have an IDE DVD burner from 2006 and a SATA DVD burner from 2008, both still working perfect. I didn't buy Pioneer for the BD burner because at that point it was like $100 more than the LG.
  11. So you're saying that this is most likely that my LG burner doesn't support the media because it's much newer than the drive? I'm not too convinced about doing that crossflash though, it's something done by a 3rd party which can brick my burner. Maybe I'll just buy a Pioneer burner that supports all the new media. One thing I don't understand, isn't the GGW-H20L an older model that was like a year older than my GBW-H20L? Why would LG keep releasing updates for that older drive but not for the newer one?
  12. I have the LG GBW-H20L since 2009 and I successfully burned lots of BD-Rs except for Memorex which are a piece of junk and went rot three months after I burned them. But since that I have been buying Verbatim and I haven't had a single coaster. I also normally erase and burn a Sony BD-RE that I bought along with the burner. Last I bought two packs of these Verbatim 25GB 6X BD-R 10 Packs Spindle Disc Model 97238, and to my surprise they don't work at all. The first showed an error at the start of the burning process: So I figured it was bad, and I tried another one. Same thing. I kept trying about five more and I got the same error message. So I wondered if the drive was bad, but I did a test with my Sony BD-RE and it went just fine. As far as I can tell, the only difference between these and all the Verbatim I burned successfully is that these are 6x, but I checked the drive specs and it's supposed to be 2x-6x. I also checked the LG website but when I went to the support page for my drive, there's no firmware updates, or a way to download that tool that did the updates automatically. In fact the LG website is so crappy that I'm sure my next drive won't be LG, I just bought it back then because Circuit City had a great deal on it. The weird thing is that I think Imgburn is not even touching the disc physically. All these discs that give me the error above, when I put them back, they still show as empty in the info window in Imgburn. Note that these discs are not the LTH models, which I never buy because I think they are not compatible with my drive. If I click Retry it keeps doing the same over and over. When I click Cancel I get a couple more dialogs which I cancel too and that's it. I'll put the full log at the end of this message so you can all see and maybe someone knows why this is happening. Normally I would just email Newegg and tell them they're bad and I want to return them, but they were running a special on these and basically I got 40 BD-Rs for $30, which is a steal. If I return them and the only problem was that they were too new for my drive and eventually I end up having to buy a new burner, I lose that great deal. So can anybody give me a clue to what's going on? Here's the log: I 13:05:51 ImgBurn Version 2.5.5.0 started!
