your recommendation did the trick; switching to the full-size ASUS drive solved the problem next up is to get the second disc going, but for now, i'm optimistic thank you again, again for your observations and help!

i'm going to follow your advice and try a different drive. this one [https://www.amazon.ca/Computer-International-BW-16D1X-U-Powerful-Blu-ray/dp/B071VP89X1/], and if if that doesn't work, i'll look into the internal drive in an enclosure approach thank you for the detailed reply. it's still alot to chew on, but more than i was aware of before, and i appreciate the help!
