2talll
Well I just burned a Cd using a new Sony CDr I just bought. Still got the Hardware error when trying to use DeepBurner, but when I used My Documents/Copy to CD/Burn CD that worked fine. So maybe I'm all set afterall (crossed fingers and knocks on wood). We'll see later this week when I try to return the Verbatim DVDs to BestBuy and again when I need to make a couple CDs for friends using iTunes. lfcrule1972
I don't want to piss on anyones fireworks here but as the boss said way back on the 1st page it really sounds like your burner is going the way of the dinosaurs...... It may stagger on for a while but given the range of problems you're seeing I think its going to be terminal. As per the posts above, a decent external burner should be a lot cheaper than the one HP are trying to flog you !
2talll
Yeah, the plan as of right now it to buy an external burner (saw some at BestBuy for $79-99) and then in the summer when I don't need the laptop on a day to day basis, bring it to the local computer shop and see what they can do about installing a newer one. I figure that way, the one I have now will still be OK when I need to burn at work and I'll have the external one when doing my main burning at home. Shamus_McFartfinger
If you buy an external burner, make sure you research it a bit beforehand. Some use what?s called an ?ALI Chipset? and it?s caused no end of frustration for dbminter (one of the beta testers here). The drives work fine as long as they?re not in the external enclose. treb12001
After having the same trouble listed in this post, I tried 3 different DVD+R's that we have in the office. I am sure they are all cheap, but here is what I ended up with. polopony
yes it is as its video, and burning to CMC MAG discs, well good luck and the next one you burn check VERIFY and see what happens, verify compares whats written on the disc to the original file (ISO).You wont find anyone here whose a CMC MAG fan its was and is the dye manufacturer responsible for most of the media problems in this forum and in the dearly departed dvdd forum .Try to play them say 6 months down the road or play it now and see if theres any freezing or pixilation etc .The Ricoh Japan is good media but apparently not for your burner ps saw the verify was ok, still, try to read it down the road
volvofl10
I tried 3 different DVD+R's that we have in the office. I 15:02:28 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: CMC MAG-R01-00) (Speeds: 2x, 2.4x) The Memorex and the Office Depot discs are one and the same, as they both have the same dye/ink ( highlighted above) suprisingly, the only 1 that worked for you , the Philps one, has CMC-MAG dye/ink, which is probably the worst dye you can get . be warned that this disc may become unreadable in the very near future, because the dye disintigrates very quickly ! ( this is due to the poor quality of the dye they use . so watch you dont lose any data back ups you make on these) recomendations for good media are verbatim and Taiyo yuden . but do look thru the drives and media forum to see whats been tested and is any good , Drives and Medis forum link Burning an image isnt much mroe differant than burning Data. its more a case of finding the best discs you can that your writer will recognise and write to . often updating to the latest firmware for the writer will increase the amount of discs that the burner will recognise and write on to. Kenadjian
Lol, the only thing that burnt successfully were the CMC's, sorry treb, in house joke. Is your usb connection 2? And only supported speeds of 2.4x max? I'd say your drive / firmware don't like any of those discs. And no, there should be no difference between burning an image or data. 2talll
What a difference the external makes! I bought an I/O Magic one (probably not the best, but since I'm planning on getting the internal replaced over the summer, it'll be fine for now. I haven't burned anthing yet, but just in backing up DVD's I've noticed a huge differnce. The one in my laptop took 45 minutes to ANALIZE a DVD using DVD Shrink- the internal encoding the entire 5.9GB movie in 11 minutes. Too bad the DUal Layer DVD-R's are so expensive or I'd really be able to have fun. The cheapest I saw at Best Buy or Staples was $19.95 for a 3 pack of Memorex and $79.95 for a 25 pack of another brand that I can't remember. With those prices I'd rather just cut the larger movies into two seperate discs.
volvofl10
IF you start playing with Dual Layer discs, only use Verbatim , NOTHING ELSE . its proven in the forum that Verbs are the only ones to bother with
lfcrule1972
I have been burning some tv episodes to disc using this media ID, RICOHJPN-R03-04 mine have all been burnt with no problem and also playback fine at the moment. However your burner doesn't report them the same as mine, below, I 19:49:07 Destination Device: [1:0:0]BENQ DVD LS DW1655 BCHB (D:) (ATA)I 19:49:07 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: RICOHJPN-R03-04) (Speeds: 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x) To be honest I wouldn't use these discs for anything I wanted to keep I prefer the reliable TYG02 dye from Taiyo Yuden. treb12001
Thanks for your help and these forums, I have learned so much in the last few days pouring over these posts. To answer some a question, the burner is an external on USB 2.0. For my home machine I just got a new NEC ND-3550A, Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Burner. I am hoping this unit will make a few less coasters. I will also be using better media per the recomendations posted. We use these at work primarily for short term backup purposes, so cost is a high priority. We are still developing our long term storage. Once Again THANKS!
