Write Speed Setting Problem With WH08LS20 Drive

I'm having a problem getting the write speed to set correctly for a VERBAT-IM0-00 BD-RE disc, which is labeled as a 2x disc, but which keeps showing up as a 2.4x disc. If I select 2x, Imgburn will give me this arror: "Write Speed Miscompare! - Wanted: 8,991 KB/s (2x), Got: 10,338 KB/s (2.4x)" and set the speed to 2.4x. The problem is that at the 2.4x setting the actual writing speed for the disc never gets past 1.1x. The write will finish and seems to work fine, but it's slow. :) My drive is the HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH08LS20 with firmware rev 2.00.

Any ideas on what to try to get it to work? Thanks.

Can you post a log of that burn?

The slow speed might be that the BD-RE verify (and not FastWrite) is enabled in the Settings in the write tab.

Also sounds as the 2x write speed is not supported in the firmware for that media code.

Looks like it was the FastWrite setting. It's now writing at 2.4x even though the media is 2x. I guess the current firmware for this drive has it set to 2.4x instead of the claimed 2x written on the jewel case. Fine with me if it works, a tad faster never hurts. :)

Thanks for the help.

You're better off doing as mmalves said rather than turning on fastwrite.

Formatting without spare areas is a correct way of disabling the drives built in defect management (which is what makes it burn slower than the selected speed).

Thanks. I had done as suggested, but it's a test disc that I play in my PS3, which seems to need the spare areas. I'd prefer it to burn quickly if possible to shorten the test/previewing process. So I'm guessing my only option is the FastWrite?

Thanks again to all for helping.
