HP is on my enemies list for a lot of their past computers, cameras, and DVD burners. Their ink and printers are about the only recommendations I can make for them. I'd recommend two things. See if you can find a Sony/Optiarc drive or one particular LiteOn drive, the IHAS 324. Sony doesn't make USB drives anymore except for slims, as far as I know, and slims on USB's are NOT the way to go. So, look for Optiarc, I'd say. LiteOn, there's lots of options but try and find a genuin IHAS 324, not a rebrand, like NewEgg has here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106334 Here's the last Optiarc I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118039 There's a later version with LightScirbe, but, it costs more, and it's sold out at NewEgg, so, who cares?!
