LIGHTNING UK!
You want a PCI card based on the Silicon Image 3112/3114/3512 (3512 is the latest model) chipset. (like the one you were linked to in post #20) What you've linked to there is using a Via chipset. Optical drives are very fussy about the controllers they're attached to. reesboi89
So are you saying it won't work? And I know it may be cheeky but since you're in the UK, ya think you could maybe point me in the right direction of the one i need? Thanks a lot. LIGHTNING UK!
You only need to eBay for 'sata 3512' (and tick the 'Include Description' checkbox). i.e. http://desc.shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?LH_TitleDesc=1&rt=nc&_nkw=sata+3512&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_sop=15&_sc=1 And within those search results you'll find an item like this... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-eSATA-2-SATA-RAID-PCI-Card-Adapter-Converter-3512-/170620568082?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item27b9c74212 Once you've got the card, visit the Silicon Image website and download the 'base' bios + flasher program. Flash the card with the 'base' bios (because you don't want the RAID one). It might seem like a pain but you only have to do it once and then you can forget about it. reesboi89
Thanks man, appreciate you taking the time to find one for me. I will look into this right away. On a side note, other than the PCi card, what do you think of using a caddy to house the Optiarc? I found one here that the seller said was suitable, let me know what you think http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250656923749&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123 Does using a caddy affect the performance at all? Cynthia
A very low price. That's nice. I have my Optiarc 7260 mounted in a similar one and no issues here.
reesboi89
Fantastic news sweetheart, and thanks for the quick reply. Maybe they should call you Lightning instead . So you definately think this is the way to go and that I would get no issues? One other thing, would I need a SATA PCI card in addition to this or is it not required? Cynthia
If your computer has a USB 2.0 port, no need for a SATA internal card. Only drawback with some caddies is that they might create a semaphore time out issue. Only way to know is to buy a pig in a poke.
reesboi89
So what exactly is the semaphore time out issue, and what is the percentage that it could happen with my chosen enclosure?
Cynthia
It errors out with that error during a burn. Bur I haven't seen it much the latest year and non of the caddies I bought have had it. Much more common for 5-7 years ago.
reesboi89
Cool, I don't think I will suffer from that as both the Opiarc 7260S and the caddy are pretty recent, plus this time theyare both NEW, not refurbished. I should have listened to ya in the first place and saved myself a lot of time/screaming/crying/more crying in the process by getting the Optiarc to start. I will keep you posted on my progress and updat you when the drive arrives on how it goes. Until then
reesboi89
Right, I've been very busy lately, but I'm here as promised to let everyone know of my progress. I got the Optiarc 7260S and the caddy after a reasonably long wait (Easter holidays) and mounted it with no problems at all, aside from my huge hands not getting on with the tiny screws. Hooked it up to my laptop, and inserted the same media discs I had been using before. The booktype was automatically changed to DVD ROM which was handy, and after tinkering with all the necessary settings, I set about burning my first Xbox 360 backup. What followed was one of the most nerve racking half hours in recent memory, as my now pesimistic attitude was just waiting for some kind of bulls**t error to incite the inevitable red mist rage that would end with me assaulting someone with a Verbatim disc. But... FINALLY! It burned without problems, verified without a hitch, and when put into the console, finally released me of my scratched disc worries as it booted perfectly. I have now had hours of fun on this disc, FIFA 11 btw (awesome), and it has yet to display a single jaggy of any sort. I have burned 5 more backups since then and all have been perfect. I just wanted to thank all the people who aided me by replying to this topic, without whom I would still be crying rather loudly in a corner somewhere smashing a Pioneer 111d into my forehead. Particular thanks go to the bombshell that is Cynthia, who recommended the beautiful Sony Optiarc. I wish I had listened to you sooner lady, instead of going with what was supposedly the best drive around. So thanks a lot. One last note to anyone out there suffering with the stuff I did, pay no attention to urban myths about backup burning. Burning at speeds of 2.4x is unecessary, as I burned all mine at 4x with no problems at all. And also, don't run out and buy a Pioneer drive assuming because it worked for one person that it will for you, I made this mistake and could have saved myself a lot of grief. So do your homework first.

reesboi89
Thanks for the support. I just have a quick question. Although I have had no problems burning, I have noticed that the speed is constantly set to 4x even when I select 2.4x. I believe this is because of the disc, as it says writable speeds are 4x 6x and 8x. I have purchased some verbatim 2.4x max write speed discs just to experiment. Will the optiarc burn these at 2.4x like I want, or is there something I need to do to make it respect this choice? Thanks
LIGHTNING UK!
You have to look at the 'Supported Write Speed' text in the disc info box on the right when you're in Write mode. The speeds listed there are the ones your drive/firmware supports on that media. Without hacking the firmware, there's nothing you can do to change that. As has been said several times before on this forum, burning at 2.4x is not the be all and end all of DL burning. There's nothing to say your drive won't produce a better quality burn at 4x than it does at 2.4x anyway (if supported in the first place).
reesboi89
Ok got ya. I checked what you said and it said the media supported 4x 6x and 8x. But like I said, I have bought some 2.4x maximum burn speed Verbatims and was wondering whether the Optiarc supported 2.4x burning. Everywhere I've checked says it does but I wanted to double check. Is there any where to prevent the drive or IMGburn to not change my selected burn speed and to go with the one I stated?
LIGHTNING UK!
I guess since you're asking rather than just doing/trying is that your discs haven't arrived yet Optiarc DVD RW AD-7263S 1.03 (ATA)Current Profile: DVD+R DL Disc Information: Status: Empty State of Last Session: Empty Erasable: No Free Sectors: 4,173,824 Free Space: 8,547,991,552 bytes Free Time: 927:32:74 (MM:SS:FF) Next Writable Address: 0 Supported Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x DVD±R DL Boundary Information: L0 Data Zone Capacity: 2,086,912 Changeable: Yes Physical Format Information (ADIP - L0): Disc ID: MKM-001-00 Book Type: DVD+R DL Part Version: 1 Disc Size: 120mm Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified Number of Layers: 2 Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP) Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit Track Density: 0.74 um/track First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608 Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,580,607 Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2,283,519 Physical Format Information (ADIP - L1): Disc ID: MKM-001-00 Book Type: DVD+R DL Part Version: 1 Disc Size: 120mm Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified Number of Layers: 2 Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP) Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit Track Density: 0.74 um/track First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608 Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,580,607 Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2,283,519 Physical Format Information (Last Recorded): Disc ID: MKM-001-00 Book Type: DVD+R DL Part Version: 1 Disc Size: 120mm Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified Number of Layers: 2 Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP) Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit Track Density: 0.74 um/track First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608 Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,580,607 Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2,283,519 Performance (Write Speed): Descriptor 1... -> B0: 0x00, B1: 0x00, B2: 0x00, B3: 0x00 -> EL: 4173824 (0x003FB000) -> RS: 6,925 KB/s (5x) - WS: 3,324 KB/s (2.4x) Descriptor 2... -> B0: 0x00, B1: 0x00, B2: 0x00, B3: 0x00 -> EL: 4173824 (0x003FB000) -> RS: 6,925 KB/s (5x) - WS: 5,540 KB/s (4x) So in answer to your question, yes the Optiarc 726x series will burn 2.4x Verbatims (MKM-001-00 dye) at 2.4x. The drive has the final say on the burn speed. You can make the program ask it to burn at any speed you like (from the drop down list), but the drive will just ignore anything it doesn't support. As I mentioned in my previous reply, you can sometimes hack/modify the firmware to adjust supported speeds. There's a program called 'MediaCodeSpeedEdit' for exactly that task. reesboi89
Hey thanks man Yeah, spot on, I can't actually try for myself yet as they have yet to show up, so asking the pros is the next best. So in theory, can I expect to be able to burn at 2.4x with my new discs, or will I get ignored again by the Optiarc? And, is there any risks to using the program you suggested e.g hardware failure and the likes? Thanks again for your patience good man.
LIGHTNING UK!
So in theory, can I expect to be able to burn at 2.4x with my new discs, or will I get ignored again by the Optiarc? The answer to that was in my post. Supported Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x Using MCSE will of course invalidate your warranty on the drive - as you'd be flashing a non standard firmware into it. If you do it all properly, I'm sure there's no actual harm in doing it. Personally, I wouldn't bother though. You've got some discs that can burn at 2.4x now and you don't need to burn the 8x ones at 2.4x, it's just a waste of time. If Optiarc didn't see fit to support MKM-003-00 at 2.4x, what makes you think you know better?!
reesboi89
Thanks a lot, I won't bother with the flashing then. I'll update once I have experimented. All of this will probably come in useful to some poor bastard who is having trouble will this whole process, so we have kinda wrote a detailed HOW TO guide with this entire thread, can't hurt. reesboi89
Ok, just burned the new discs I bought at 2.4x. The burn went without a hitch, but horror of horrors, I got a no seek complete error during the verifying stage at around 50%. I don't have the log but it was something to do with I/O error and had a bunch of numbers on it...any sugestions?
