ron spencer
Ok....if I go into the Build mode and destination is my burner (I have not tried this for other modes). I get a choice of burn speeds. So if I put in a DVD-R and look at the device tab I am shown what burn speeds my media can do, in this case 4x, 8x, and 16x HOWEVER, I can manually choose any speed I want; even 52x. Should the speed choice drop down only show those speeds relevant to the media I have? 52x should not be there. Of course I can read from the device window and act accordingly, but for the sake of neatness should only the relevant speeds be chosen? Also, if I put an already burned DVD in and choose mode build or write no error comes up...should the program notify the user if improper media is in right away? If these have been discussed earlier or I am overlooking something my apologies. Thanks LUK for a great proggy!!!!
LIGHTNING UK!
It's cosmetic and no it's not supposed to limit to what the drive can do. Just because nero does it, it doesn't mean it's the best way for everyone! Why would you want build or write mode to error out if a burn disc is in the drive? Once burnt, it returns to that screen - and the disc would obviously not be writable. By your example, ImgBurn would then have to display an error. Instead it just doesn't enable the 'Write' button and a message to that effect is put in the status bar.

Indeed. I've often found that Nero doesn't update the speed list when it should so you can be left with choices of 1x-6x, even though you might have a 16x disc in the drive. ron spencer
of course it is cosmetic, but I just thought it was a bit wierd to see 52x as a burn speed for DVD. I just thought that some new users might see this and figure either the program was flaking or their burner was wierd. Again just a suggestion to ensure that program does not look "funny" at some stages... and a user may want to limit burn speed and having the indicator be correct would be good. For example, those who buy crummy media like R*tek, which cannot be burned well at 16x....4x would be good. just my 0.05 cents!!!!
LIGHTNING UK!
The program burns CDs too remember That's why it goes over 18x. It has always been this way, so to was DVD Dec. 'Supported Write Speeds' is always visible in the panel above when selecting the 'Write Speed'. A user can look at this for reference. Of course if the user selects a speed higher than that allowed by the drive, the drive won't die or anything, it'll just burn at the max it supports. The speeds shown in the log at the end (and in the progress screen during the burn) show the true speed of the burn. I appreciate the feedback but this falls more into 'Suggestions' than it does 'Bugs'.
ron spencer
you're right....it is a suggestion...sorry maybe you should move it there. Yes it does burn CDs....nicely too. To be honest I never really articulated my point as best as I should have. I told my 65 year old father about ImgBurn a few days back when 2.0 came out. Your program is so well written that even at his age he figured it out FAST. However, when he put a DVD in to burn he called me and asked about the 52x speed thing for a DVD...so I tried it as well. So I guess my suggestion is to have ImgBurn realize what media is in the drive at set the relevant speeds accordingly (no such thing as 52x dvd burn). True this is just cosmetic, but for some really, really new users it may make the difference in their adoption of ImgBurn...and perhaps donation again thanks for the proggy and feel free to move this topic to suggestions.... chewy
I have had issues with the burn speed feature, it's a problem with being used to another program, my approach now is insert a blank in the drive I will use to burn, then wait, start imgburn and switch to the device tab. One burner will burn a certain blank at 4x only, my other at 4x, 8x or 12x(how to make a coaster).

LIGHTNING UK!
The speed is set about 3 times in slightly different ways. If the drive choses to ignore all 3 then I'm afraid there isn't much I can do about it. Does the write speed stuff work ok on normal media? Maybe it's a firmware bug for DVD+R DL media only. It's all the same where ImgBurn is concerned. When I have time I'll dig my 109 out of the cupboard and see if it's erroring out as I try to set the write speed. No. Nero 6.6.0.15 write this DVD by PIO-109 use 2.4x correctly. When I have time I'll dig my 109 out of the cupboard and see if it's erroring out as I try to set the write speed. Thanks for fast reply. Maybe i must use other drive interface?
LIGHTNING UK!
Sorry, so it never sets the write speed properly on *any* media? What I mean is that it's odd if it works ok on normal dvd-r / dvd+r but just no on double layer.

LIGHTNING UK!
Ok, I really need you to do a little something for me... I think the problem might be coming from your regional settings and how the write speed '2,4x' is being (or rather not being) converted to a floating point value on your pc. If the conversion fails, it defaults to 'Max' you see. I say this because I've just tried my 109 and the conversion goes ok and the correct write speed gets set and is accepted. So anyway, here's what I need you to do. Leave the write speed configured to 2.4x and try burning a DVD+RW rewritable or DVD-R/-RW with 'Test Mode' enabled. Just before you hit the 'Write' button, press the F8 key. It'll then add loads of additional I/O debug code into the log. Once it's started burning, abort the burn, save the log and attach it in your next post. Don't forget to press F8 again after the burn to disable I/O debug mode Many thanks. I've no idea why they're failing, perhaps something weird is going on with your drivers. As the drive is showing up as scsi, I guess the drive must either be on a 3rd party ide controller or you've got some weird drivers on for your motherboard ide channels. Critter
Maybe, maybe it is problem in my specific drivers... Hmm... It is very bad. Really, device (DVD driver) it is IDE, of course. I use specific IDE driver for my VIA chipset. In OS all ide-devices show as scsi. It is feature of this ide-driver. I try use other interfaces. Thanks for support, bye. snnorlaxx
I seem to be having a similar problem. Trying to burn Verbatim D/L +R disks. I set the burn speed at 1X but the writing is done at 2.4X. Fortunately the disks work ok but I'd prefer the slower burn. Just for fun I tried a mini dvd (1.46)in the same Panasonic SW-9574S drive and it burnt at the speed I selected (1X). I've attached logs of both burns. Thanks I 15:03:33 ImgBurn Version 2.1.0.0 started! I 15:03:33 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 2) I 15:03:33 Initialising SPTI... cornholio7
you have to look at the supported speeds, if it doesn't support it for a certain disc, it will not burn at an unsupported speed DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-001-00) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x)I 15:03:45 Write Speed: 1x I 15:45:05 Average Write Rate: 3,213 KB/s (2.3x) - Maximum Write Rate: 3,779 KB/s (2.7x) DVD-R (Disc ID: RITEKG04 01) (Speeds: 1x, 4x)I 20:09:23 Write Speed: 1x I 20:29:42 Average Write Rate: 1,341 KB/s (1.0x) - Maximum Write Rate: 1,417 KB/s (1.0x)
lfcrule1972
As corny said the Verbs don't support 1x writing - they write fine on my BenQ and NEC drives at 2.4x so I wouldn't worry
LIGHTNING UK!
2.4x is the lowest speed for DVD+ format media anyway. Not that I've looked very hard but I've never seen a drive supporting anything less than that. One of the orignal benefits of the plus format media was that it burnt quicker than any available minus format media. (i.e. 2.4x Vs 1x or 2x). Obviously that doesn't apply now though
