dbminter Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I need some freeware utility that will convert Windows codec container files into .AVI or some format that VirtualDub can edit. I need it to convert the source file into a VirtualDub compatible file that will convert without loss of video quality. Can anyone recommend such a thing? Thanks!
ianymaty Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Why don't you use AviSynth as frameserver for VirtualDub? http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Avisynth You don't need to convert temporary to other format to use it in VirtualDub. http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/225793-How-to-open-MP4-MKV-WMV-RM-MOV-OGM-with-any-editor-encoder
dbminter Posted December 28, 2013 Author Posted December 28, 2013 I've downloaded and installed AVISynth. So, I'll try this trick next time I want to edit a Windows codec/H264 or whatever it's called file. I hope I can remember to try it.
dbminter Posted December 29, 2013 Author Posted December 29, 2013 Well, I tried it out with my test file, but it was no go. Got the error: AVI Filter Import error: (Unknown) (80040154) The always helpful Unknown error.
dbminter Posted December 29, 2013 Author Posted December 29, 2013 Let's change the subject, then. Can anyone recommend a freeware video editor that will edit video like VirtualDub so I can trim out segments of video? I need to save the file in the same audio and video format as the input.
ianymaty Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Try Avidemux http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
dbminter Posted January 14, 2014 Author Posted January 14, 2014 Unfortunately, Avidemux just doesn't work. I knew something was up when the slider wouldn't move. I tried using the mouse to move it to the end of the video clip because I needed to trim out Freemake's stupid logo that they add to the end of their clips in Video Convertor. But, the slider wouldn't move. So, tried some of the buttons at the bottom. Discovered one that advances the slider by 25 seconds. So, I thought I'd just use it to advance to the end of the clip and use the individual frames button to go back. Avidemux just started Not responding for a while but finally made it to the end. However, this tool is NOT for video editing. You need to be able to move the slider with the mouse to move to different positions within the video. Jumping by 25 seconds at a time and then advancing back frame by frame just doesn't cut it.
ianymaty Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 As I understand Avidemux will use I-frames to cut so it's not what you want as it's not frame accurate when you are not reencoding. (SmartCopy) I think you should insist with Virtualdub and AviSynth, just need to fiind the correct filter that allows you to work with your file.
ianymaty Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Does this help you ? http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html
dbminter Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 Sounds like it might. I've downloaded it and will have it on hand to try the next time I need to... and can think to test with it.
dbminter Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 Nope, it's no good. I loaded a different test file and it just displays a blank screen where there should be video. So, while you can edit the file you have to know the EXACT time to start and end, which means using an external app to view it. Too complicated and much work for an application that should do it itself.
