Why do 8x DVD+R DL sometimes write at only 4x?

I've seen this happen on just about every drive I've ever owned.

I'll put in a Verbatim MKM 8x DVD+R DL that, randomly, only writes at 4x max.  ImgBurn is set to write at MAX.  ImgBurn says that 8x is available for these discs before the burn starts.  Yet, sometimes, and it appears to be random, that it only writes at 4x.

Is there a particular reason for this?  Or is it again down to just whatever the drive returns for the maximum write rate?

No reason that I can think of, no.

ImgBurn doesn't really pay any attention to the write speeds reported by the drive. It sends the command to set the speed to whatever you've selected and reports back with whatever the drive then thinks it's going to be burning at.

If the 'Effective' speed is shown to be 8x, it should be burning at 8x. Internal drive stuff is then what would be causing it to burn at a different speed to that - either something in the firmware or the chipset itself maybe.
